Just spent four days at the Novotel in Cotonou and I can't complain. I do a lot of traveling and I have my own list of priorities: cleanliness, good bed, good shower, good internet connection and a good pool. The Novotel scored well on each of these points. As mentioned in the other reviews they've just finished a major renovation and the place was certainly clean and comfortable. My bed was very comfortable and I had a great shower in my room with plenty of hot water and good pressure. Free highspeed wireless internet connection in the lobby, bar and restaurant. I actually could make a connection in my room, but others staying there said they couldn't - I was on the second floor on the front side just above the main entrance. The outdoor pool was excellent. I like to swim to get my exercise and the pool was at least 20m long with an infinity edge looking out towards the beach. The bar and restaurant had good food (try the pineapple in the morning), coffee was so, so (expresso better than regular stuff). Staff were friendly and the overall atmosphere was nice. It was my first trip to Cotonou, so I can't compare to other hotels. There was a brand spanking new Ibis hotel right next door, and I've heard that the Hotel Marina is also good, however, when I booked the room rate at the Novotel was more than 100 euros cheaper!

My parents in law stayed at this hotel during 10 days. I visited them on a daily basis and I can tell you that this place was clean.
According to their evaluation form, they indicated that the hotel was neat and clean, the food was good, but that the staff needed to be more affable.

The housekeepers (two guys on this floor of the hotel) were very good and professionals. On the other hand, the front desk has to learn how to be kinder to clients; some of them don't understand that they need you to sustain their business and therefore their paycheck. Also the tall and slim lady who works at the breakfast buffet every morning needs to be put somewhere else in this hotel she has poor customer service skills to interact with hotel patrons. Another positive note goes to the doormen always polite and at the right place to open the door whenever you enter or leave the lobby at anytime (day or night).

Rooms were just renovated and very appealing with a nice TV and room bar refrigerator. Clean and well maintained bathroom.

Once the landscaping is completed, it will have a nice garden and area around the pool.

Agree with other travelers - very generic hotel. But rates were better than the Benin Marina (aka the old Sheraton). And the staff and (very) small lobby are much more friendly.

Small rooms were renovated last year to somewhat meet Novotel standards with a very functional built-in cupboard (hangers and doors), safe, and small fridge. Small flat-screen tv. Couch. Balcony.

Bed's built-in headboard DOES HAVE an outlet for laptop as does desk unit. But only two outlets makes it tough to charge phone, laptop, camera, etc. at the same time.

Wi-fi in the lobby but NOT in rooms - only dial-up in rooms. (Same as Benin Marina according to my husband.) Cell phone coverage for most local networks is spotty.

The ocean view is pleasant - ask for a room facing that direction. Of course you shouldn't visit the beach - here or at the Benin Marina. Far too dangerous in town to even consider. If beach access is a priority, you'll need to go to a resort outside of town.

NOTE ON CURRENT STATUS: Pool is closed as they build a new one so lots of construction noise. Check status before booking and ask about rates. (You can taxi two minutes to the Benin Marina and pay 3,500 CFA to use the facilities for the day.) Restaurant is also under renovation but meals are available in another room.

Typical Novotel chain hotel with similar feature that you get in other Novotels througout Africa. In comparison with these and the European Novotels better consider this one a 2-3 star hotel...room facilities are clearly substandard with no cupboard and hangers. No sockets to plug in laptops and chargers...

My room was clean and safe, location at the beachfront with a pool but the beach is not really accessible (not even recommended for saftey reasons to swim in the sea).
To go to the airport it is just a 3 minute ride but to town it'll take you 10 min with a taxi.

Overall I was not impressed at all - If you have the choice I would definitely prfer the Benin Marina just next door. It offers more on a totally different level for almost the same rate.
