My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon at Caye Chapel, and it was absolutely fantastic. Our villa (#4) was incredibly spacious, and although it was just the two of us, the second master bedroom came in handy - when a bird flew in in the middle of the night (stepped out for some air), we just relocated down stairs until someone on the staff succeeded in shooing it out. October is considered off season, and we did get rain every day. But, it never rained before 6 pm, by which point we had done all of our outdoor activities, so we didn't mind one bit. In addition, the bad weather scared off everyone else - there was only one other couple on the island while we were there, so we felt like it was all ours, really. The food was consistently good, and Ric, our waiter, was fantastic. Katie was incredibly helpful, and was always prepared, be it protein snacks for my husband, snorkeling gear, or bug spray. The island was fun to explore in a golf cart, and there is a reef right outside of villa 10 that we snorkeled at, no need for a boat, and all equipment provided. Just walk into the water! I really liked not having to have a wallet around, not having to tip, and knowing that things like wine, bottled water and cocktails were very reasonably priced. Cocktails about $9, most wine ranging in the $40s. My husband and I loved Caye Chapel, and plan on coming back. There were only two somewhat related inconveniences. One, the bugs. Perhaps the rain brought them on, but they were merciless. The second was that there is no place on the island where its ok smoke indoors, and so the bugs made it absolutely impossible for my husband to enjoy a cigar.
The soundness of the buildings, bathrooms/jaccuzzis/pool, air conditioning, all equipment very pleasantly surprised me. Everything is new, quality, and well made. This wasn't just stuff that looks good in pictures, but when you get there is all shabby and out of order, this was a truly well maintained, luxurious resort. Everything was new, in great condition and constantly maintained.
We went to one other island to try diving lessons, and the difference is night and day. Throngs of 19-year-old backpackers with horrendous sunburns, trash all over the beach, stray dogs. Maybe when I was 19, with a group of friends it would be fun, but for a honeymoon, what little I saw of the other island was not acceptable. I am really happy with my decision to spend my honeymoon at Caye Chapel, my husband loved it, and we can't wait to come back. If you are looking for time to yourselves and a leisurely pace, this is it.
