“Could be great, but has two major flaws”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

Our room, the "standard double," was of generous size, with two big windows letting in lots of light, and unobstructed view, yet completely private. A great feature is the small, about 2 x 2 meters, entrance, separated from the main room by a closeable door. It can serve as a dressing room, and as a place to sit and read comfortably when your spouse is sleeping, making the whole a sort of mini-suite. The furniture in the room is tasteful. Two single beds, chastely placed at opposite corners of the room; two big armchairs, nicely upholstered but badly in need of re-stuffing, etc. The woodwork on floor, furniture, doors, is especially attractive. (The hinges require a drop of oil.)

I would give the place five points "Excellent", if not for the following two flaws.

1. Mosquitoes. On a moderately cool summer night we left the windows open for a while, with the disastrous result of mosquitoes buzzing and biting most of the night. Then we closed the windows, and the room was unbearably hot. Now, of course I do not expect Hotel Vesta to solve Brest's mosquito problem on its own. Neither do I expect them to air-condition the entire building. But there are relatively inexpensive, low-tech solutions. First of all -- screens. Screening one of the two windows would suffice. A fan could help relieve the heat.

2. When we arrived, the clerk at the desk, a nice well-meaning woman spoke no English at all. Fortunately our guide stayed through the registration process and translated. I do not know how we would have managed had we arrived a the hotel without the guide. (When we checked out the desk was manned by a different woman, who had sufficient English.)

For the dati traveler: About a 10-15 minute walk to the center, where the Jewish institution, such as it is, is located. Keys -- standard, not electronic.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2012

Stayed at the Vesta Hotel for two nights and it had everything a solo traveller would need. The room was clean and quiet, and the hotel provided a breakfest that assisted on my early morning. Hotel is a bit of a walk from the center of town, and took about an hour to walk to from the Train station. Hotel is right next to soccer stadim, but best part is it was about a 30 min walk to get to the War memorial, which is a must when in Brest. Staff assisted with registering my visa upon arrival.
