We just stayed two nights at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort-Montana. We wanted a special occasion, so we booked the honeymoon suite. The view from the "honeymoon suite" overlooks the mechanical area of the hotel. There is a large hot tub in the room which really raises the room's temperature. When we checked into our room, it was 92 degrees inside and 80 degrees outside. We tried the AC, but it didn't work. We tried to open a window, but there were no screens and as I mentioned, the view was atrocious. When my husband went to ask why the A.C. didn't work, he was told that because the temperature was dropping at night, the AC was off and the central heat was on. They told him there was nothing they could do about the temperature of the room. He decided that we had better move, because with no screens and no AC, the room would continue to heat even more with the hot tub.
We gave up our room, to move to a first floor one-bedroom suite. Same price as the honeymoon suite. This room was 80 degrees...not a lot better. It did have a sliding screen door, but not one that locked, so if you left your room, you couldn't leave it open to cool the room down when evening came. You also couldn't sleep safely in a room with an open unlocked screen. When we asked if that room could have AC, they offered us a fan.
After sleeping through the night in a "suite" that was 83 degrees, we went back to the office the next morning to ask if there was any way they could turn the AC on during the warm daytime, to cool the rooms down.
They said that they would, but hours later,....no AC. We went back to find out what was going on. They said they would send someone to find our why ours wasn't on, but they never did. Instead, we went back to the office and told them that if we couldn't get AC, we at least wanted an upstairs room, so that we could leave the windows open at night. They weren't happy to oblige, but finally did. We loaded up all of our gear,...traveling with portacribs and all, and moved upstairs. We started up the AC, which we were told they would turn on for only two hours, and checked the windows. This room had a screen door, but it was lying on it's side on the balcony. We called the office yet again and told them about this. They told us that maintanance would be right up to fix it. After waiting for 45 minutes, we fixed it ourselves and called them back to cancel the maintance request. We were not even given an apology for the fact that we were doing our own maintenance.
If this was a Motel 6, I would expect so much,...but this room was $279 a night before tax. This same room skyrockets in price when you leave "value" season. My husband is a business traveler and is accustomed to paying $150 a night for a similar size room, with nice pillows, high speed internet, wonderful service and AC or heat when he needs it. This room was twice that much and had none of the above.
The pools are cool. They had been recently refurbished, however, the hotel room, even being a suite was worth no more than $100 a night, making the use of the pools the low value price of $170 a day. There are cheaper rooms available at this resort, but it sounds from other reviews that I have read, that they are way worse than the rooms we experienced.
The food in the cafe is extremely pricey and there is really nowhere else close to eat. O.k. for one meal,...but three a day?????
All in all, the thing that blew our minds the very most, was that there was never any real apology, any offer to upgrade, knock down the price, free waterslide passes, coupon for the dining room,....etc. Our price was $602 for two nights of disappointment. At that price and value, it is no wonder that the hotel was a complete morgue. Maybe 15 cars in the parking lot, including people just visiting the hot springs, not staying in the motel.
My advice......spend the extra time and drive to British Columbia's Ainsworth Hot Springs, just outside of Nelson, B.C. It has hot spring caves, and if I remember correctly the rooms are about $100 Canadian and the service is outstanding. You do the math.
One last note. I am not usually difficult to please. I have never written a complaint letter or bad review to anything, and more importantly,....have never changed rooms in a hotel...much less three times in 24 hours.
