After my first trip to UCO in 2002 , I have returned every summer. This year was my first without my two sons in tow, as they are grown now, with jobs and girlfriends. I go to the ranch for horseback riding, and July in the mountains of Montana is beautiful: wildflowers, scenic vistas, warmth without hunidity, giant blue skies. The folks at UCO are hardworking, friendly and very accomodating. They will do whatever it takes to make a guest's trip memorable. Jake and Donna welcome each guest like they are part of the family, and you truly feel like you belong there. Meals are served in the lodge; I foolishly thought I would cook for my kids on our first visit, but they wanted no part of that, and as it turned out, neither did I. The comraderie and dinner conversations with other guests and ranch staff are second only to the amazing food. Homemade desserts like strawberry rhubarb pie, key lime pie or brownie sundaes make gaining weight a risk, but so delicious! There are plenty of vegetables and salad served at every meal, as well as fresh fruit available, so it is possible to make healthy choices.
The horses are Quarter Horses primarily, and are kind, safe and sure-footed. Safety is paramount at UCO; you can feel confident that you will be well taken care of. The wranglers are knowlegeable, helpful, and friendly. The majority of the horses have been there throughout my 10 years; they become trusted UCO staff members! There are lots of badger holes, big sage, and steep hills in the mountains and these horses never put a foot wrong.
The accomodations are homey and comfortable. The cabins have full kitchens, two baths, and lots of beds. In the lodge the rooms have dorm size refrigerators, are roomy and most can sleep three. My favorite place other than in the saddle is rocking on the front porch with a cold beverage watching big horn sheep graze on the opposite hillside.
If you are looking for a beautiful place to relax, step off the treadmill of your life, recharge, and immerse yourself in the beauty of Montana's montains, Upper Canyon is the place to be.
