So, you're flying your plane over some remote, sparsely populated area in northern Mississippi when the propellers sputter to a standstill. You jump out; pull the ripcord; parachute your way to an open pasture, where you land on the back of a cow and ride to the nearest town...not an interstate or high-rise office building in sight! You look up at the sign...."Welcome to Amory, Mississippi". Then, the first thing you think is, 'Where am I gonna eat?'....Right??? Well, this is it.
El Rey beckons you, just ahead. And even though there's no Margareta on the menu (dry county), the sweet tea is superb and the food is really quite good! You simply don't find Mexican food of this caliber just anywhere in small towns and cities around these parts. If nothing else, the art work on the walls and the general décor are worth the price of admission ($0)...absolutely incredible... a Mexican Sistine Chapel. The service is outstanding...waiters come from everywhere! Very friendly, very gracious...but they don't take American Express. They have an 'All You Can Eat' program for a very reasonable price, both lunch and dinner, that includes about 6 or 7 items to choose from....but, we didn't explore that. We ordered lunch and dinner specials from the rather extensive menu which were all excellent, perfectly prepared. It appears that all the police in town eat here, so that should tell you something. Overall, an unexpected and outstanding culinary experience for such an isolated location, at a reasonable price. I rate it a 5 relative to restaurants in the area. Out of a group of 6, everybody thought it was excellent. Ole!
