“Museum Cottage is delightful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2009

We spent several days at the Museum Cottage and highly recommend it. It is spacious and includes a full kitchen, up-to-date bathroom, and other amenities needed for a lengthy stay. Outdoor recreational opportunities are nearby such hiking, biking, waterfalls and other sights to visit. The point at which the Au Train River and Lake Superior converge is ideal for swimming (sandy and warm). Great place; we plan to return next year!

Susan Larson's beautiful home on a historic property, bordering two lakes, proved to be a delightful 2-night stay. The only minor drawback is the lack of a quality, decent restaurant in the local area.

Our "Paulson Room" faced the lake on the property, which is home to loons and great blue herons. It is a bird-watcher's and nature-lover's B & B. Moreover, Susan is the only B & B owner who left fresh wildflowers and home-made, mint-lemon-aid in our room upon our arrival. No one to date has ever made this sort of special effort or showed us this brand of kindness. The following day, we arrived home after exploring "Pictured Rock State Park" to find warm banana bread on a silver tray in our room! Not only is the B & B clean, beautifully appointed and comfortable, the owner is the ultimate hostess.

Susan's breakfast is unparalleled. She serves hot, home-made, steel-cut oatmeal (not the typical, packaged gluey-glop) as well as an assortment of quality, cold cereals; whole-grain bread; muffins; lots of fresh fruit accompanied by a bowl of low-fat yoghurt (this generosity and nutritional IQ is unprecedented--except for "The Sunflower Hill Inn" in Moab, Utah). The main course was fantastic: whitefish hash with a poached egg one morning and a vegetable omelette-souffle with asparagus.

This B & B has no competition. I highly recommend The Au Train B & B.

Susan offers 2 exquisite B&B rooms each with a private lake view deck and a cozy, romantic cottage with a fireplace. We stayed in both the cottage and a B&B room. Both were comfortable and beautifully furnished. Susan has has the perfect ability to be helpful and welcoming while allowing privacy. She was a great help with directions, suggestions and brochures that met our interests. The breakfast was fabulous. The bedding was luxurious and so comfortable. We loved watching otters swimming at dusk in the smaller lake. After breakfast one morning as we sat in Adirondack chairs on the deck sipping another cup of her wonderful coffee we were visited by a doe and twin fawns. Pure magic!

My husband and I had a wonderful evening at the Au Train Lake B&B celebrating our 15 year anniversary. We enjoyed Susan's muffins and her wonderful stories and mannerisms. The setting is beautiful and only enhanced by the beautiful rooms in the B&B. Breakfast was also incredibly delicious. We highly recommend this B&B to everyone!!! In fact, if Susan one day decides to leave...we would love to buy it!

We thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Our spacious second floor room had two views, one of Paulson Lake and from the balcony, Au Train Lake. Imagine the quietness of the surrounding forests with the sounds of loons and many other species of bird serenading you as you use the binoculars to spot the muskrats on the water or the deer family that frequents the place. Sue is a gourmet cook who seems to enjoy her eclectic guests offering them genuine hospitality. Of all the places we stayed, on our honeymoon trip traveling through upper Michigan, this was absolutely my favorite.

When you are there, remember to take a canoe ride on Au Train River. The three hour trip was calming and serene. We used Au Train Rentals and Curly, the owner, was very helpful in making our experience as nice as possible.

This is a wonderful B&B. Our room was very comfortable with a view of the lake, the meals were delicious, and the hosts were very interesting and helpful. Susan was a great source of information on how to find wildflowers in bloom, area waterfalls, places to kayak, etc. She was so thoughtful in seeing that we had little extras we might need - homemade cookies and fruit for our trip down the river, iced tea when we returned, cello music at breakfast after she learned our daughter is a cellist. I highly recommend a stay here!

My wife and I loved the Autrain Lake B& B. We stayed in the upper Paulson Pond room overlooking the pond with a view of Lake Autrain. The service was delightful, the breakfast delicious, it was only too bad that we could only stay one night!
