“We received incredible customer service from more than just one staff member”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2011

Our department of the University of Michigan held 4 training sessions at the Courtyard by Marriott in March, which covered 2 full days. The room was beautifully set up and the service was incredible!

Because our program ended earlier than anticipated, the banquet manager, Kathy, sucessfully changed the time that lunch was served with only a few hours notice. I had not anticipated how quickly she was able to put our requests into action. Her willingness to make changes to the menu and to go above and beyond to please us was much appreciated.

Walter and Erica were also amazing in their service. They anticipated our needs, and met them before we even realized we were lacking; aways with a positive attitude and a smile. We ran poor Walter to death, adjusting the heat, getting new batteries for the microphones, and changing the time of the lunch and he still, along with Erica, made each interaction an absolute pleaser. Kudos to a fantastic team and thank you for helping us to make our training event a sucess.

My husband and I stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Feb. 12 for a short Valentine's weekend getaway. When we arrived at 2:30 pm they did not have our room available despite our request to have an early check in. They tol us it would be closer to 3 pm. I was disappointed but understood that they couldn't guarantee early check in. As we waited, I tried to get a little last minute work done -- but the wifi was apparently over burdened. We asked the staff about it and they simply shrugged their shoulders and said maybe it would work later. This was actually a huge inconvenience for me because I had booked the hotel based in part on the wifi they pledge on so many of their pages. I ended up having to call someone else from work to make some last minute changes because their wifi was down. So we waited. And waited. And waited. After about 45 minutes, I returned to the desk only to overhear someone else being booked into suite. Dave said the previous worker who helped us, LaTonya, hadn't told him we were waiting. He did scurry to find us a room and about 5 minutes later we were booked it. The problem? He booked us into a jr suite. When I told him my confirmation clearly said suite, not jr suite, he insisted that the reservation system indicated it was a jr suite and it didn't really matter what my confirmation said because there were no other suites available to move us to. I said, ok, but I would like you to let you manager know about the issues we've run into and that we really are not satisfied with the level of service we have received so far. Dave said he would talk to his manager but really didn't think there was much he could do about it. He said he would call and let us know. We went to our room. It was the weirdest hotel room I've ever stayed in. Our "sitting area" was super small. Basically the bathroom is in the middle of the room creating two small rooms connected by a hallway. It actually ended up feeling like we had less space, not more. Really there was one foot of walking space on either side of the bed. That's it. All of it was very awkward. Then, Dave called and said he talked it over with a few people and they thought the most we should be given was $5 off our bill (of $160 per night). Frankly, I found that insulting. I have never before complained about a hotel or asked that my concerns be passed along to the manager. There also was a cheer team staying at the hotel for the night. Honestly, all the teen girls were fine, even though it wasn't quite the atmosphere we expected for a hotel ranked No. 1 on tripadvisor. And, really, that is the level of this hotel. It's great for a youth team. Nothing special about it. One other warning, if you do stay here absolutely do not spring the extra cash for breakfast. We ended up spending $15 for a sausage muffin, blt, pop and small coffee. It is not a buffet so we don't get to pick and choose multiple items and you can either get one hot item and a beverage or two muffins and a beverage. You eat in the lobby. It's not really a restaurant. And, it just wasn't good. There are lots of great places to eat in Ann Arbor, but heck, Even McDonalds would have been better than that. Frankly, it's right next to several other hotels and I'm sure th Holiday Inn would have far surpassed this "Marriott" property.

It is with sincere regret to happen upon this feedback as it is every intention to not only meet, but exceed a guests expectations and experience. The last phase of room renovations being finalized as we speak over the next 2 weeks, including the new Bistro restaurant concept
(which was completed last year) are all apart of the refreshing upgrades we now offer based on past requests from our guests. This feedback is important, so we may continue to impress the majority of our guests wants, into viable realities where possible. Addressing several noted issues, the following hopefully assists in understanding some of what transpired in a broader spectrum
* every effort is made to accommodate early check in requests, that is all dependent on the night prior reservations, which we were sold out..We definitely could have done better in communicating to each other internally so the guest did not have to wait long
* HSIA is a top concern and beginning 2/20/11, we are under a new service provider that has a proven track record of higher capability for the demands of HSIA for hotels- we are very excited to finally be able to transition to that
*The guests history regarding room type, which is tracked from beginning to end of every reservation, was actually originally booked and maintained in a Junior Suite room. A Suite was not a factor or changed at anytime during the history of the reservation, having said that, we are actually in the process of renaming that room to an "Extended King" verses a "Junior Suite" for that very reason of potential misconception. The changes for that were actually submitted prior to this guests concern and should be live through our system with in 2 to 3 weeks
*The lobby is an open concept, with multi faceted interactive areas for enjoyment, leisure and business. The open floor plan allows for all guests to effectively eat. drink. and connect seamlessly. As a #1 ranked hotel, many guests have found the new interactive lobby and menus to be just the refreshing change they were looking for. We take great strides to hear feedback and incorporate much into our renovations, stylings and amenities..s.ome of those changes may not be what all are looking for in an experience, unfortunately
* Lastly, but most importantly, the experience of guest services at our front desk, is of the highest priority, we will utilize this feedback to fully engage the team and to strive to do better under extremely busy conditions and to improve our service under those conditions for each guest as we could have done better there. Obviously this was a special evening planned and we failed to create that sense of urgency regarding this guests concerns. Please know we hear you and take it very seriously. We appreciate your feedback

I was in Ann Arbor for a business trip and this was the friendliest and most accommodating staff I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Customer service was outstanding! If something wasn't right, they fixed it and took responsibility for the problem. We keep strange hours with our job and the night staff was very helpful. The cleaning staff did an excellent job in spite of the fact that major renovation is going on at this time.

This staff is one of the best I have encountered. I look forward to a return trip to this hotel.

We stayed in Ann Arbor because our son goes to UM and we always look for a Marriott. We were not let down. The new renovation of the lobby and bistro were great, the staff was friendly and helpful and we had a very comfortable stay. I would recommend this hotel to anyone---very clean, no bed bugs! We have already booked future visits for this spring, and we look forward to staying at this hotel again.

We recently went to Ann Arbor and stayed at the Courtyard Marriott. Having stayed there before, we knew it would be a nice visit. We were not aware of The Bistro (hotel restaurant) which was so much better than what is usually offered. The prices were resonable, the food was fine; breakfast offered healthy choices, as did dinner. The staff was so helpful to us and our particular needs. The rooms were clean, the bed comfortable. We had no complaints. We would definitely recommend the Courtyard Ann Arbor.

Stayed at the Courtyard Ann Arbor on business recently. They have some brand new recently upgraded rooms. Shout out for excellent service goes to LaToya W. As I travel frequently it is always extra nice when the staff go out of there way to make you feel welcome and comfortable and this staff really did that for me. This Courtyard has the new updated lobby with dinning onsite. Breakfast was very good. A couple of local restaurants near by. Will stay there again next time.

We where in town visiting family for Christmas. Our stay was very pleasant. Young man at the front desk was very helpful and knowledgeable. Room was very big and nice. The only problem we had was upon making the reservation. We where informed that our room would have a microwave and refrigerator, which was kind of a necessity as we had young children with us and have to keep up with there growing appetites. The room had a refrigerator but no microwave in sight. We called the front desk questioning the problem, the gentleman apologized, and mentioned that he didn’t have a room of that type available as it was Christmas Eve. He did note the presence of a microwave in the lobby but said he would look into what he could do. Soon after, ty? or shy? Not sure of the exact pronunciation, from maintenance, brought a microwave direct to our room and set it up. He was very helpful and apologized several times for the mix up. He also informed us of anything else we needed to let the front desk know and they would do there best to accommodate. Not sure as to the young man at the desks name, I believe it was dan? But these two gentlemen where extremely helpful and show they take pride in what they do. I will stay at the courtyard every time I’m in Ann Arbor just to come across more employees like these two, which you don’t see much of now of days. but I would recomend updating records as to stoping this from happening agian.
