I took a dear friend of mine to the Gandy Dancer for a special occasion for LUNCH. Lunch is typically a meal where you can expect smaller portions and usually significantly smaller prices, right? WRONG at the Gandy Dancer. We were both presented with a 'special's menu where the only thing special were the prices - approximately $25 for a serving of fish. Upon reviewing the regular menu typical prices for a fish entree were about $18 for the least expensive and in the $20's for the most (not including lobster or shrimp dishes). The meal does NOT include a salad or bread and we were hungry so we split one of their salads and had to REQUEST some bread and butter. The service was somewhat spotty. No sugar or sweetener offered or brought with the tea - I had to wait until he came back to ASK for that. He couldn't seem to remember to keep my iced tea glass full and I only got one refill at the end of the meal after I ASKED for a refill. Maybe he could have brought the tea with the bread which he explained you only get upon REQUEST - as the management saw how much bread they were throwing away. I'm surprised there wasn't an extra charge on the bill for it!
I haven't been to the Gandy Dancer in a while and now I remember why. Our bill was just over $70 for two fish lunches, one salad, one dessert, one iced tea. With a tab like that I would have thought they'd have been doing everything possible to make sure we had everything we needed without us having to ask. I got the overall impression that they're cutting costs while raising prices. Not particularly blown away by the meal. It was just okay. Now with everything ala carte expect to pay dearly for any experience at the Gandy Dancer. I think I'll save my money for a better value elsewhere next time. Lunch was 2 hours long - which was fine as we had a lot of catching up to do. However, I felt that too much time was spent looking around for the waiter. The place wasn't packed and I wondered where he'd go off to...oh well. Not the first place that's going to pop into my head next time I want to take a friend out for a special occasion.
