It was a grand day, touring the University of Michigan campus with my spectacular grandson. Could it get any better? We thought Italian food was a great choice for his last evening here and decided that inviting my sister and my niece would really make it a party! Gratzi's is my sister's favorite restaurant downtown- we dined al fresco in the cooperative Michigan weather. A good time was had by all. The drinks were good despite the bartender essentially working alone. He was apologetic for the more than normal wait time for our drinks. Our table was obtained in a very reasonable time. The appetizers we ordered were good, the mussels outshining the fried calamari, our entrees were all good, one of us had veal, one pork, one fish and one vegetarian option a pizza was ok. The cannoli was prepared vertically and was very good and the sorbet was fresh and tasty as well. So why only 3 stars- it was the service. Water and tea were empty more than full, the courses were not timed properly and we were never offered dessert, we had to ask for a menu and coffee. My niece is a very talented hostess during her summers in her freshman and sophomore college summer breaks at another downtown venue and she was mortified at our service. This was obviously not the norm as my sister would not have recommended it. I will try it again- they may just have had an off night.
