We have been visiting Greenfield Village to celebrate Halloween for about five years now and have always stayed at the Best Western Greenfield Inn. This year was no exception. We had a wonderful time and a nice stay. Greenfield Village, if you don't know, goes completely out for Halloween. Each evening during the weekends leading up to Halloween they carve over 500 pumpkins to line a pathway leading through the village and invite visitors to walk this path and visit the treat stations that are along the way, as well as some interesting village 'spooky' characters!
If you are traveling to the area or planning to visit the sites at Greenfield Village or the Ford plant I highly recommend staying at the Best Western and taking advantage of their great packages. Let me start by saying, as I often do in my reviews, if you want all of the creature comforts of home...well, stay home! If you want all of the luxurious comforts of a 5 star hotel...well, stay at a 5 star hotel. If you want something that is family friendly, relaxing, charming, and reasonable then stay here at the Best Western.
When you pull up to the hotel, the fact that it is HUGE and PINK is your first clue that this is going to be a fun and charming visit. The lobby is full of interesting things including a large troll statue. Our boys like to rub his nose, so we say it's for 'good luck'. The desk staff are super friendly and very helpful. I often read reviews from folks on Trip Advisor who often complain that the front desk staff are not friendly (not necessarily for this hotel, but for others), and as the Travel Witch I also like to say to these people....'Friendly Is as Friendly Does' - if you are rude and demanding to staff, they just may not be overly friendly to you! So, people, put a smile on your face - and chances are a smile will be returned! Especially, here at the Best Western Greenfield Village. Oh....and don't forget to help yourself to a cookie at the desk!
The rooms were clean and comfortable. One of our challenges (not a complaint, a challenge) on this trip was our bathroom counter was not very big and for some reason when the whole family travels together, we seem to have a lot of toiletries! This may have just been the section of the hotel we were in, because it is not something I remember as being a challenge in some of the other rooms. We managed for the short time we were there and again, I remind myself, at home I have even less space! My true complaint though, would be the fact that the AC had been turned off for the season and it was an unusually hot spell and the room was really hot. The window could be opened, but being on the ground floor was not something I wanted to do overnight. The hotel staff was very apologetic and explained the situation and offered to bring a fan to our room which did help immensely. The worst time was in the morning when everyone was showering and the room would get really warm. If I had been on a business trip and really trying hard to do hair and make up this would have made me nuts, but as it was a family trip we just rolled with it - cracked the window, cracked the door and got by. My recommendation to the hotel would be to not shut down the AC until maybe Thanksgiving as we have such crazy weather patterns in our neck of the woods.
Our boys love the pool and it is well kept and maintained. While it is a heated pool, I found it freezing, but the hot tub was nice and warm. The weekend we stayed there, there were several traveling sports teams there also. The amount of children running rampant through the hotel made me a little crazy, especially with many of them unsupervised at the pool area. I will say, the hotel did step in and offer assistance in both the pool area and the hallways after hours to curb the craziness. Thank you!
Their is a restaurant on hand and with the vacation package, breakfast is included. Thankful for the sports teams because it meant that the breakfast buffet was available to all the guests and was delicious. (Again, if you want home cooking.....eat at home!). There is a great selection of foods and no one would go hungry at breakfast time. Fran who is one of the waitresses at the restaurant, who I swear must work from sun up to sun down always has a smile on her face - she rarely writes anything down, but doesn't miss a beat. She makes the restaurant and all of the waitresses and kitchen staff follow her lead. Again, if you smile....they will smile back! If you are frowny....well...they might smile back, but I'm not sure, I'm not frowny!
We decided to have dinner at the hotel one of the nights we were there and ordered pizza the other. If you choose to order pizza, we highly recommend Jets. Ask the staff at the desk and they will give you a packet with menus, coupons, and phone numbers for all of the area pizza places and let you know which ones will deliver to your room. The restaurant at the hotel also sells pizza too! Our dinner at the hotel restaurant was good. I will say, I have two boys that will eat most anything if it is deep fried, so of course, they had chicken strips - they both agreed that the chicken strips were too salty (I wasn't sure they even knew what too salty was with what they typically eat), and my oldest is a bottomless pit - but he drew the line at his chicken strips. The rest of our meal was very tasty.
There is a bar connected to the restaurant so you can catch all of the game action and that was the main reason we ate there so we could pop over to the bar to catch the score of the game. Which I just have to say....'nothing sweeter than an OSU win when you are watching on a television in Michigan'!
We look forward to the next time we can visit. We all decided that the getaway was just what we needed and wished we could have stayed longer! Two wonderful signs of a great trip! See you next Halloween!
Ground floor rooms are nice and the rooms right down the hall from the front desk are my favorite
