“Good hotel, great location but small rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

We stayed two nights as part of a larger group. The location of the hotel is superb and close to the beach and restaurants. The hotel is in an older building and nicely refurbished. Rooms are very nice and clean but very small. Breakfast was good but crowded. Unfortunately there was a lot of fog while we stayed here and the sun did not burn through until late afternoon. Probably due to the cold water and hot weather inland. Vina del Mar is pretty, but there were a lot of partying kids everywhere and stray dogs everywhere. I would not visit Vina del Mar again.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 5 days and 4 nights. The service was just average and the room was far to small for the furniture that was in it. We stayed in the Junior Suite. We are slender people and we had to almost crawl across the end of the bed in order to get from the balcony into the other room. The breakfast was ok, however two mornings in a row we had sour stomachs, not sure what that was all about.

Stayed here for the last part of our South American trip and were both greatly surprised and disappointed at the same time. This is a decently well-kept typical older rustic hotel. Beds are good, room amenities include two chairs, a flat-screen TV, a rather small bathroom with bathtub.

Bathroom is in decent shape with no apparent smell and no evident signs of being dirty. However, there are clear signs of age and some discoloration in bathtub. Water pressure was acceptable but not more. Again, a small bathroom. Rest of room is nice, we had a room overlooking the ocean and beach. However, lots of noise both from beachfront and traffic until the late hours in the evening. This is due to poorly insulation in the windows and one glass sliding balcony windows. Still a good room that is cleaned every day with plenty of towels and the room also has a fridge and decent storage space for luggage and clothes.

Complimentary breakfast is good, although the same every day. Rather crowded when we were there but that time of year Vina is extremely crowded, so no issue at all.

Location is A+ with beach and nice restaurants all around. Two minute walk to the supermarket and just overall a great location. Staff are very helpful, especially the lady concierge from Sweden who helped us so very much! A bit of a confusion upon checkout, which was a language problem was resolved reasonably quickly.

Best part of the entire hotel: the "pool" area on the roof!! Very nice, very few people and a nice but very small pool overlooking the ocean. A great place to be and just relax but beware of the sun! I do not easily burn but burned severely in 20 degree overcast in just 90 minutes. Vina fools you but the sun is extremely strong and UV-radiation is real bad!

Overall a good stay and just enough to get my nod for a "very good" experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room high up and facing the ocean!

Hotel is a little to modern for our taste but the location makes up for any negative. Fantastic view of the beach and water, wonderful balcony to enjoy a glass of wine or dinner in room. Perfect location in great reastaurant area. To heck with Hawaii, we are hooked on this fantastic beach and city.

Location is excellent ! In my opinion you won´t find a better location. The hotel is very nice and the rooms very clean and spacious. It´s next to the sea and in front of the hotel there is a nice italian restaurant called `La dolce vita`. It´s near the cassino of Vinã del Mar and lots of restaurants. There´s also a big supermarket just a few blocks. There´s a swimming pool at the roof of the hotel and the view is beautiful. Unfortunately the pool is small and the water very cold. The breakfast is excellent as well as the service. I´ve been to Vinã a long time ago and the city is growing so if you want to stay in the best part of the city, choose this hotel. There are two malls and you can go walking along the beach if you stay there.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms at higher floors. At Vinã del Mar there are lots of birds called `gaviotas dominican...

I spent 9 nights at this hotel on a combination business and vacation trip. Lovely view of the ocean from my fifth floor balcony. At night, you could enjoy the sound of the waves or the quiet air conditioner. My room was small (especially the shower). In-room safe is too small to hold a laptop, and there weren't many ways to lock something down. Doors do not seal out much hall noise, and it is hard to close them quietly.

Staff was very helpful. Breakfast is fine, but other meals at the restaurant are mediocre; wines by the glass (even in the bar) are bad. Fortunately, there are many nice restaurants nearby (see my restaurant reviews). There is no pool. They do have a small exercise facility.

It is very nice to walk along the waterfront (in either direction) starting at the hotel. Lots of people out walking, etc. The neighborhood is very safe (according to my local contacts), and I saw nothing that indicated any problems. Weekends are very busy at this hotel, with lots of families coming from Santiago for the weekend. So there is a lot more noise.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean view on the fifth floor or above (as less noise).

We spent four nights in this hotel. It is very well kept, everything in immaculate condition, starting with the carpet in the halls and the room.We had a double room with a very small balcony overlooking the beach. Its a shame to see the quantity of very tall buildings that are erected in the sea front. Vina used to be one of the most charming cities in the world, but it's not the San Martin hotel to blame.Another sad view is the quantity of stray dogs. I was even a little afraid to walk the sea side. but, again. its not the hotel's fault.
Ok, about the hotel. Everything is nice in it, breakfast was average, like in all the other Chilean hotels we have stayed.
The room is very cheery and well furnished, but very small for a 4 stars hotel. We were bumping into each other all the time. We expected more for the high price.
There isn't a proper sitting room in the lobby, just some sofas in the breakfast room, and the bar was crowded most of the time. Again, for a 4 stars hotel it is not enough.
What makes the hotel a winner are 3 factors: location, location and location.
