“Wonderful hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We stayed at Hotel Genross while visiting our son who was in the midst of a study away program for his university. We chose this hotel based on the great reviews from Trip Advisor and we were not disappointed. Brian and Lya are most gracious hosts and provided much personal attention and many helpful recommendations during our visit. We loved the fruit and fresh baked breads for breakfast and were so thankful to enjoy good coffee. The hotel is 'off the beaten path' enough that our taxi driver was not familiar with it's location, so a phone call for directions was necessary to find it.

The hosts are knowledgeable and friendly. The hotel is lovely. The rooms are small but very clean and comfortable. It is the perfect quiet spot. I really enjoyed my stay and would stay there again. The hosts love classic American rock and roll and if you sing Mustang Sally Brian will sing along :-)

If you are on your way to Valparaiso for a cruise, or want to visit Valpo, stay in Vina del Mar and stay at the Genross. Valpo can be treacherous for the traveler, especially if you don't look like you're from Chile. You need to guard yourself and your possessions quite closely in certain parts of the city, especially at night!

Vina is a short metro, micro (bus) or taxi ride from Valparaiso and will offer you many things much more familiar and safer.

This is THE place to stay if you don't want the hotel experience and would love some local background and tips on what to do and when.

Brian and Lya treat you as a valued friend, not as a paying guest. The house has been restored over the years and is beautifully furnished, with lots of light and a beautiful back patio. It's clean, clean, clean and very comfortable. Breakfasts are good, and for those of you who are coffee snobs, like me, the coffee is not the usual powdered nescafe you find in Chile.

One thing to think about when you book is that the Chileans live on a different clock than N. Americans and Europeans, they eat their final meal of the day at 8PM or later, and don't usually go to bed before midnight or 1. This can make for some unhappy travelers who are used to earlier bedtimes. Hotel Genross works on a much earlier schedule, and is far enough up above the hustle bustle of Vina, that you won't be hearing much of the nightlife. Did I mention that one of the things most noticeable to many Americans is the noise level in Chile?

On the other hand, right down the hill about a block or so are a couple of the hottest bars in town for those looking for some fun. It's also close to the Sheraton Miramar, which has one of the best bars in town for happy hour and a killer ocean view. Spend the money you save at the Genross eating and drinking here or in town.

Yes, it's an easy walk to Vina Central, or a quick micro ride to the Mall and other beaches up the coast or Valpo to the south. Brian can give you instructions on mastering the system. Taxis are also fairly inexpensive here too.

I was traveling solo when I visited and never felt alone with Brian and Lya on the lookout for me.

If you're having a hard time choosing places, choose this one, I promise you won't regret your choice.

Room Tip: Ask for #8, it's bright and sunny with a good view of the church on the hill! Also, plan some w...

Just a half block up the hill from the midst of the loud, busy craziness of downtown Vina del Mar sits this little gem of a restored, cozy and quiet small hotel. It's more of a B&B run by a really friendly, welcoming English-speaking couple (Brian is Canadian, Lya Chilean) who are available for advice, directions, even the occasional glass of wine (Chilean red, of course!). Clean, comfy rooms, hot French press coffee (or tea if you're my husband) & breads in the AM, as well as a place to park if you need that, add to the convenience. You do not need a car though, as it's an easy walk down the hill to bars and restaurants, or to the subway and buses that will take you to Valparaiso or beyond. Last year we were at the Sheraton which was super fancy, but we found staying at the Genross more relaxing and the price was right! Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Quietest room faces away from the main road

We spent just two nights in Vina at the Genross. The location is great, right in the downtown area, close to everything and very handy for the Metro and restaurants are just a few mins walk away.

We were 'fortunate'? enough to experience our first ever earthquake here so we will never forget the place! Brian was a charming host and gave us lots of help and info about the area. He was very concerned for us during the earthquake as it happened at 1am and came to check that we were ok.

Loved the house, it felt like a home from home with all the Victorian features and wood. We brought a car and so handy to be able to park it securely right outside.

Would definiately recommend this as a place to stay in Vina.

We could not have found a more perfect place to spend our time in Vina del Mar. This beautiful Victorian home was a quiet, peaceful haven in an otherwise bustling city. Brian and Lya could not have been more generous, helpful hosts. We felt right at home. They made every aspect of our stay comfortable and helped us in situations that otherwise would have been difficult with our lack of Spanish language skills. The home is within easy walking distance of local beaches, restaurants, sights and shopping. We rented a car to explore the wine region and were very pleased with the ample, secure parking available on site. I would highly recommend this charming little gem versus an impersonal stay at a hotel. We would love to return some day.

Having checking TripAdvisor reviews, I thought the Genross would be perfect to 'recharge my batteries' after a week of serious wine tasting! By car, the Genross is easy to find from Valpariso direction but relatively tricky from Concon or Limache so best to get directions in advance. However, there are plenty of buses and taxis available, if needed, plus the Miramar metro stop (which is also on the main road through the town) is only a short distance from the B&B.

The house is 'downtown', near the shops and supermarkets etc but in a quiet location and thankfully well away from the heart of the tourist areas. I expected some noise from the road, especially as my room was not double glazed, but it was very muted - the Chileans seem to be relatively calm drivers (except in Valpariso) The road from Miramar to the house is up a short but steep incline and could present a problem for anybody with walking difficulties. Having said that, the local taxis are very cheap and always available.

As mentioned in other reviews, it's cash only but there are lots of ATM's nearby and Vina del Mar is a safe area. As long as you've warned your card company that you'll be in Chile, you shouldn't have any problems paying!

The house itself is Victorian: very calm and elegant with lots of wood, high ceilings and open spaces to relax in. It is, unfortunately, now surrounded by new flats but that's the norm in this coastal strip part of Chile now. I did not hear any noise from these buildings, even on a Saturday evening during the main holiday season. After the blandness of the 'international' standard hotels in Santiago, the Genross is a breath of fresh air. No TVs or fancy gizmo's but plain old fashioned hospitality...and lots of it.

Brian and his charming wife, Lya, are most definitely 'old school'. They're only too happy to sit down with a glass of wine or two and have a chat about, well, nearly everything under the sun. We started off discussing grapes and probably finished off with quantum physics! I wouldn't recommend getting Brian started on local politics or the price of gold but just about anything else is fair game.

Breakfast was simple but very tasty. The fruit, some of it home-grown, was superb. Brian even made me some excellent coffee (from his secret supply!) as the Chileans are wedded to Nescafe rather than proper caffeine.

Both Brian and Lya are lovely hosts and were very kind indeed, even inviting me to the family BBQ on Sunday afternoon when most of their extended family turned up. If you like trouser presses, mini-bars and 97 channels on satellite TV, then this is not the place to stay. However, if you like people and the lost art of conversation, then I would recommend the Genross very highly indeed.
