“Great Owner, Great Hostel, Perfect Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

Patricio is an incredible owner. I traveled with a few other students and he gave us great advice on where to visit. He also went to the market with us and cooked an incredible meal with us. His friendliness coupled with the location, cleanliness, and comfort of the hostel makes it the perfect place to stay. The hostel is perched on a cliff overlooking the city and the ocean and is only a short walk away from one of the best views in the city. My group couldn't have asked for a better stay.

Little castle is a hostel on a big hill (Cerra xx) near the Sheraton miramar.

If it were not for the noise, I would say this place is not horrible if you don't mind the below and you know what you're getting yourself into with sharing of the bath rooms (after all, its a hostal).

I do not recommend staying there for the following reasons:

1) its located in an area where loud club music blasts from down the street until late in the night (maybe 4am) - if you are looking to party all night this may be the place
2) they host students who live there for long periods of time and while I was there they hung out on the terrace directly below my window smoking drinking and laughing loudly. Even after I asked them to be quiet, the continued a short while later.
3) the walls are paper thin. In fact the wall between rooms 1 and 2 is not a real wall - if you look at the top and corners you will see spaces and you will hear most movement, conversation, coughing, snoring, etc as if your neighbors are sleeping in the next room.
4) the downstairs bathroom is not one you will want to use. It reminds me more of a public bathroom in a school but poorly constructed. The upstairs full bathroom is more normal looking - keep in mind you will be sharing this with all the other guests. I've been in several other hostels where the bathrooms are made for several people and are cleaned meticulously. Here you are staying in someone's house essentially and the bathroom, which are single person use like at your home, and are cleaned probably once per day. The owner, on most days we were there, runs the place by himself. On the last day he had a woman come help prepare food in the kitchen, clean up breakfast, and likely clean later.

On the plus side:

1)The location is pretty central and if you don't mind the location next to the clubs and bars you can quickly get to restaurants, beaches, and valparaiso. Having visited the area, I would probably stay in valparaiso next time as its more interesting.

2) The price is definitely less than the hotels in the area. I'm a Starwood person so I considered the Sheraton but I thought cash and points was too expensive and I had to jump through hoops to get it booked (it wasn't available online).

3) the owner will help you figure out how to get places and suggest a few things. He is however a bit moody so sometimes he seemed annoyed to be working there.

I suggest you just find a nearby hotel which can be had for not much more. A room costed $81 usd cash + $9 hostel world deposit. Be sure to bring usd because he doesn't accept credit cards and by paying usd you avoid the 19% tax (assuming you are a foreigner). The owner said he should post this online because many people run into this problem and have to run to an exchange place which is not exactly around the corner. They are within 10 minutes walk but may not be in the direction you prefer to go and is a waste of time especially if you just arrived and its getting dark (not a safety issue but I prefer to use the daylight hours to see some sights). But hey, its up to you if you want to save 19%.

On one of your days there be sure to do the tours 4 tips free tour in valparaiso.

The little castle lies on top of the hill close to the city center and the beaches with a nice view over Vina del Mar. There is a spacious foyer with a castle like comfortable vibe. The rooms are all worked out with wood and are very clean and arouse the feeling of a carming cottage along a french beachshore. Patricio, the host, let you feel at home. Thanks for the stay.

Little Castle is like having a home away from home. Great place to roam from Vina del Mar and Valparaiso have so much to offer that a week is not enough. Good times come mostly from feeling good and Little Castle allows a worrisome holiday.

Patricio is an excellent host and the place itself is amazing. It has a huge terraza with a pretty cool view of the city and it's located at walking distance from the center. The bathrooms are really good, always with hot water. Definitely recommended.

Patricio is such a great host!! The house is beautiful and in a great location on the hill overlooking everything and within walking distance to everywhere you need to go. Breakfast is tasty, the water is always hot, the bed is comfy, the kitchen is very usable. It's a bit chilly all day since the floors are wooden and there is no heating system, but that's our only complaint, and patricio does have space heaters you can use. The patio terrace is AWESOME and we did a BBQ with Patricio one night. He's such a great person and very knowledgable- he definitely makes the place!

Room Tip: Room 1 is definitely the nicest.
