“Wonderful Desert Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2014

We just spent a lovely weekend at the Bab al Shams resort in Dubai. This five star resort offers a desert adventure, with all the creature comforts you’d expect from a top notch resort. The ambiance is an Arab fort style, with gorgeous carpets and arabesque trimmings.

We had a wonderful camel ride into the desert, and visited the camel farm and saw the baby camels, as well the beautiful Arabian horse stables. There were lots of activities at the resort to keep us busy, aside from the gorgeous pools. There was archery, a falcon show and free camel rides, volleyball, and a nice fitness center and health spa.

The best part of the stay was the evening meal and show at Al Hadeera restaurant. An elaborate and scrumptious buffet was highlighted with a fun show, starting with singers, dancers, and then a full light show with Arabian knights on horseback in a duel and a full camel caravan. All topped off with a belly dancer to wind up the evening's entertainment.

Room Tip: We had a corner with two rooms, a king room and 2 double beds that had separate door, so we had priv...

Fantastic hotel, in a simple "rustic" Arabian fort design - the rooms were stunning (the biggest bed we have ever seen - c 8ft wide) with great bathroom facilities. There was also a lovely private terrace for us to use just outside our room - better than a balcony! The room was EXTREMELY low lit, apart from the Bathroom, which took a bit of getting used to (felt a bit like the black hole of Calcutta!)

The pools were lovely - although the main infinity pool was really cold, and the floor could be a bit slippy walking between the pools, so pool shoes are a must! The service was superb, as was the food. Every evening there was a falconry display, and free 5 minute camel rides are available beyond the pool area on the edge of the desert.

Could not fault the cleanliness, facilities or service (apart from check out which involved a slow and tortuous wait in a queue) The most striking thing about the hotel is the total silence, apart from the constant background sound of running water and birdsong. We found it the most relaxing and comfortable break we had ever enjoyed!

Room Tip: Don't bother requesting a room with a balcony - the rooms are surrounded by dense greenery so th...

My wife and I spent a night at the hotel with our baby. We booked a regular room not knowing that all of them are on the first floor. With no lifts and narrow staircases it was nearly impossible to handle baby, buggy, bags, etc. So I asked for a ground floor room (which is an upgrade) to which the staff almost immediately agreed. And this is what makes this resort different - staff that actually try and understand their guests.
From here on I knew our experience will be great - and it was!
One of the most relaxing holidays you could have in this sort of retreat. Not to mention one of the best Indian restaurants.

Room Tip: Check online for an appropriate room for you.

This is a memorable hotel. All the environment including swimming pool, restaurants, staff services. This is a place to go in Dubai. Very near the city (35 km) you can stay there and still know the city of Dubai. Everybody should try!

Room Tip: I prefer the second floor to have more privacy..

Wow what can I say about the weekend away, my husband surprised me that we were going away last minute for Valentines Day and we reached to Bab Al Shams in 45 minutes. The welcome was great, reception was busy as the hotel was fully booked, we took a seat for around 10 minutes to check in, we were offered amazing soft dates and Arabic coffee it was lush, we arrived for around 2:00pm and our room wasn’t ready they check ed us in but we had to come back in 1 hour to collect our room keys. I heard a lot about the roof top bar so I thought the weather is great let’s have a look around the hotel and head towards the roof top. The hotel was nice to walk through all the ground staff was very welcoming and we got greeted all the way to the roof top. We had a drink, chilled, talked and watched the kids play archery, camel rides and other activities. It was now 4:00pm and we decided to go and collect our room keys as we wanted to get ready to go and watch the sunset and have dinner in the evening. We were told there was no reservations on the roof top it was a 1st come 1st basis.
We arrived at our room 205 it was a lovely standard room on ground floor overlooking the desert, the bed was lovely and big, the bathroom was outstanding with the traditional stone bath which you had to take 3 steps up to get into the bath. We were given a box of stuffed dates, some fruit, water on the side table and the bonus was an espresso machine. The usual was included in the room flat screen TV inside the cupboard, minibar, hairdryer, free tea & coffee and good quality toiletries. While in the room I decided to ring the reservations for dinner tonight Le Dune was fully booked and the earliest we could have a table was 10:45pm, which we declined.
We decided to get ready and head down to the roof top at 5ish as we wanted to watch the sunset we got there and the manager asked us to wait upstairs as the tables were full on the roof top and he said he will call us (but he didn’t take our name or number) we wait for 1 hour and 30 minutes or so and realized that people who had come after us had been seated and we were just standing there like lemons. My husband (very angry)went downstairs and spoke to the manager and as a couple left the table he said you sit here, we were behind a wall so we couldn’t see anything but the people in front of us. We spent the night on the roof top ordered some food and we were happy as they had heaters next to us. They had a firework show around 11ish so we waited till they were finished and left to go back to the room. The roof top was busy and the staff really looked after us once we were seated. We are vegetarian so there wasn’t much choice on the roof top apart from the cold mezze, falafels and fries but the portions where a good size.
Once we got back to the room, I realized my husband was not happy, he said he had spoken to reservations when he 1st booked the hotel that they were going to decorate our bathroom and have ready a dozen red roses, but due to all the waiting around and not keeping their promise he told me he will never come here again and he felt this is not 5 star service.
Next morning we had woke up late and went to reception to find out why certain things were not done, the supervisor was very nice and wrote all details down and said he will check and get back to us when we check out. So went to the swimming pool to relax in the sun, no alcohol was served before 12:00 noon so we ordered some fresh juices then ordered a pizza for lunch by the swimming pool for 1:00pm.
The manager for food and beverage came to speak to us, Mr. Elie regarding our experience yesterday evening, we told him what happened and he asked why we didn’t go and have dinner at Al Hadheerah? We said that we were told from reservations that there is not enough choice for vegetarians and we guessed paying 495 per person was not worth it. He was not happy to hear that and said he will look into that, as there enough food for a vegetarian. I suppose if we come back we will check. The manager offered us a lunch but we had already had lunch so he offered us complementary drinks.
Then we went back to our rooms as we requested for a late check out. While we were checking out, were waiting at reception and then top manager came and introduced himself and asked us if we had time to have a chat, we were offered dates and coffee or juices, answered most of our questions and apologized a lot. He said to inform him when we come back again as the treatment we received during our stay was not valuable.

Room Tip: if you want a desert view room 205, it has a small garden with chair & table :)

We traveled to Dubai in March 2012 and ended our trip with one night at Bab Al Shams. Although our cab driver got lost on the way and instead took us an hour out of our way, in the wrong direction, forcing us to find another driver, we were sorry not to be able to stay any longer, and next time would do it differently: The rooms were beautiful, we had a great night of drinks and food outside at the bar, and laying out in the sun by the gorgeous pool was wonderful. Service at the pool was supremely attentive, too. The entire property was gorgeous and I highly recommend this place to anyone traveling to Dubai--you won't be sorry!
