Having stayed at the Al Qasr many times over the past few years i can honestly say that resort wise you cannot top it. The first time i stayed here everything was perfect and over my many visits things just seem to be slipping. My last two visits have been dissapointing. The stay in June was meant to be really special and i had made the booking in feb to stay in June. It was a birthday and an anniversary both significant no's. We always transfer from the Burj al Arab and they had called through upon check out to make sure our rooms were ready. Upon arrival we were told that we had been upgraded to an ocean view room but it was in the Mina A Salam. I was already dissapointed as many of you will know that you have to pay a higher rate to stay at the Al Qasr infact quite a lot more and that's absolutely fine by me because my children love the pool there and so i am happy to pay what was asked of me in order to stay there. Anyway, things got worse...2 hours later we still didnt have a room. Eventually after lots of telephone calls and waiting around the manager of the Al qasr admitted that the hotel was fully booked and they had given away our rooms. I felt like crying at this point because i had brought 12 people to this hotel for what was meant to be a really special trip and after staying at the Burj where everything really is perfect everytime and coming to this was a complete nightmare. We were hanging around in reception with no seats, young children who were really hungry and speaking to a manager over the phone who got cut off on a number of occassions. I think the whole thing was handled so badly, so unprofessionally and i cannot even describe how i felt. I eventually demanded a room to sort my children out, change them feed them while all this was being sorted out. So now 12 of us were in a standard double room hanging around. All the suitcases were also dumped in this room so you can imagine. Anyway this went on for hours and eventually around 4pm bearing in mind we arrived at the hotel at about 12 we finally got rooms. Some of us had to share rooms even though we were not even part of the same family and one rooms was probably the furthest room away from the lift. I was so upset as were most of my friends and family and the whole holiday just became so stressful. The manager then came over from the Al Qasr and we eventually spoke to her and sorted things out but the attitude was that 'we had rooms' and were not out on the street.
I think i was annoyed at the fact that they charge extra for the al qasr and then they overbook the hotel and think its ok to move you to the mina a salam and there is absolutley nothing you can do about it.
For anyone thinking of going to this hotel i would say this...its a fantastic resort and what makes it special is that you have access to all the other jumeriah resorts so its great. The staff all over the hotel except reception are great. The managers for both the hotels are so inexperienced for a resort of this size.
The kids club, the pools, all the dinning facilities, everything about the resort is great. The service and personal touches have really gone down over the years but you would never really know that unless you have stayed there from day one regularly as it is still very good but just not as good as it used to be.
Do not book at a peak time or when a conference is on to avoid a repeat of what happened to me as this is the frist time i have been peak summer holidays.
The Mina A Salam is also a very good hotel there is no real difference in the two hotels but its the pool that you are paying extra for. When you have young children you just want to be able to walk to the pool and back rather than take an abra everytime.,
Rooms are standard, nothing special but they are clean, big and traditional. I'm actually quite upset that i was left so dissapointed after my last visit as i really do like the resort. I think that the reason why i will not be returning to the Al Qasr is because like other reviews have said there are so many high end hotels that have so much to offer that you are actually spoilt for choice.
If its just little things i think i could let it go but when you are let down so badly it really does make you think that you deserve better especially with the amount that you are paying.
The Burj is faultless, consistent and the whole experienece has been effortless everytime i've stayed there and i don't expect those standards whereever i go because you simply can't compare anything to that but i think giving your room away and taking hours to sort it all out and trying to sort it out over the phone rather than in person really outwheyed the good this time.
There really are resorts with far better customer care skills such as the one and only which is incredible. The spa is not the greatest either, the spa itself is lovely but the quality of treatments - well i've had a lot better. Lots of us have tried the treatments over the years and we've always said they are quite average, the elemis spa up the road in the royal meridian is much better.
