“Tallest hotel in the world.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2014

The hotel is very impressive when you enter. The check in took longer as usual as the deal I purchased had breakfast included. At check in they proceeded to inform of the breakfast costs. I told them of the package and showed electronic confirmation. Then after a long while they asked could they take a copy.....I said you have read the record and the confirmation record, but they required this for the manager to see...so no empowerment or clear record of bookings....so check that your booking and check in understanding. On getting into the room I received a call asking about my room service order? Yet I only had just arrived in the room....
The sports bar velocity and the kitchen 6 the breakfast were both excellent. Car valet takes about 10 minutes to get the car, so call down early. The room for the price is very ordinary and I am not sure how it will look after being used for a while as there were coffee stains etc already on the carpet. The bottles of water supplied compared to other hotels of similar quality were very mean especially as they supply a kettle...no coffee maker.

Room Tip: All rooms and views are very similar. Try and get a high floor for the views towards Jumeira.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2014

This is the first time I have stayed at the JW Marriott Marquis at Business Bay DUBAI. I have stayed many times at the JW in Deira in Dubai. Of course one gets to know a hotel with a longer stay and this review is based on such a 1+ week stay here. This review will also compare the two hotels. However to be short this will be my last stay at this hotel. For me it is like baseball – three strikes and you are out.

Check-in: Checking in for Elites is on the 37th floor where the lounge is located. This was my first experience of the dreaded elevators, as it took nearly 10 minutes to get one. Of course when a hotel is nearly empty – one would expect to be upgraded. My colleague also a Platinum was upgraded earlier in the day – for me a standard room – no upgrade = STRIKE 1. Other issues – in all Marriott’s I have found Elites are welcomed – get a welcome letter, a discount on F&B, fruit basket etc. Here NOTHING. Even the platinum gift of nuts and a soft drink was – small cup of nuts and a single small can of soda.

Location: Located in Business Bay – it is close to the Dubai mall and about a 10 minute walk to the metro. However there is nothing of note in the neighborhood except lots of construction. The JW Deira area is nothing special either. However for me it depends where I am doing business – so to speak which side of the creek my business takes me.

Service – hotel staff at the JW Marquis was efficient and somewhat friendly. Best part was of all things – the door staff. They remembered our names. Other not – but this is a very large hotel which makes these things impersonal. In JW Deira it is always welcome back – or after two or three days good morning Mr. XXX.

Food – It is kind of ironic that I stayed at this hotel and did not try any of the restaurants. Especially, since you are close to the Dubai Mall and Downtown Dubai - why eat in the hotel. Ironically – I did twice go to the JW in Deira for dinner with customers at their request. The JW Deira hotel has very notable and local favorites as the Blue Lagoon and JW’s Steakhouse which are excellent.

Rooms – The Rooms have a modern design but are relatively small for a typical JW Marquis. But that design is very poorly executed. Sun bakes the room during the day and there are no sunshades. TV is mounted in such a way as the only way to view it is in bed. The two lounge chairs in the room are useless. The bathrooms are very high end, however the shower design is very poor as they located the shower controls in the rear and you must get and get wet (frozen or scolded) to adjust the temperature of the rain ceiling mounted shower head. The showers have no skid pad or etching in the marble making them slippery when wet and unsafe. Touch electronics for the lighting does not work well. An example of the poor lighting is you turn the lights off with the master switch and go to the bathroom in the middle of night and turn one light on and the result is all lights are now on in the room. Compare this to the JW in Deira, with its large spacious rooms that overlook an atrium – Advantage by far JW Deira.

Elevators: Worse aspect of the hotel - it is big. There are not enough elevators and there are long waits. Just look at Tower A = 5 elevators for the hotel portion which has 30+ floors. At the JW Deira there are 5 elevators for 6 floors. What further frustrates the situation is the electronics don’t always work and you will stop at a floor and all floor selections will reset. Another issue is that the elevators stop when the fire alarms sound. There were several false alarms and the elevators were down for over ½ hour which caused me to be late for a meeting. This alone will cause me never to stay here again – STRIKE TWO.

Lounge: Yes it is consumes a complete floor. So it is relatively large but it is needed. However disadvantage is that it is not convenient. Wi-Fi in the lounge is spotty at best. Some sections of the lounge have no signal. Food is good. Service is pretty bad in the morning. Sometimes have to hunt for the chef to get eggs cooked. Good service in the evening with more staff.

Wi-Fi: Poor design and not enough capacity and bandwidth. My VPN would not connect all of the time, especially when hotel was crowded, towards the end of my stay. Wi-Fi would disconnect frequently also. As noted above, the Wi-Fi in the lounge is spotty. Elites get free Wi-Fi but non elites have to pay 100AED for a day (over $25) which is outrageous. Other hotels in UAE give this for free only Marriott seems to like to rape their customers here – so beware. Having poor Wi-Fi is enough not to stay here again – but it is STRIKE THREE anyway = goodbye.

Room Service: Service was sometimes long. Typically 45 minutes, compared to the JW Deira which is 30 minutes or less.

Other issues: False fire alarms. One woke me up on a Saturday morning. I did want to sleep late. The other stopped all the elevators when trying to leave to make at 1pm appointment. Bad!!!

So in summary – hotel is not a 5* star property and JW would be ashamed to have his name on this property. I will be back to Dubai in 3 days – and I have already booked my stay at the JW Deira.

Room Tip: Do not stay in Tower B -- especially if you use the Exec Lounge which is in Tower A. If you don'...

Got to be one of my faves lovely comfortable well equipped rooms, lots happening onsite for nightlife, great restaurants. Good for up and downtown, but why, after I spend on rooms, food and room service do you feel it necessary to charge for wifi. To me this is just tight and hotels should move into this century and provide it for free. Your not budget so stop behaving like it

stayed in this hotel with some friends for the Easter holidays. It was simply luxe! The staff were quite friendly particularly the concierge and the front desk personnel. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the executive lounge with its great view. I stayed on the 69th floor and it was good. The Saray spa located on the 3rd floor was awesome and the salon was no exception.

My son took me to Dubai for a mother's day gift and I chose this beautiful hotel as it was in the Marriott family and had familiarity. The JW Marquis most certainly lived up to all its hype from the moment we arrived there. The customer service was impeccable and the rooms were absolutely breathtaking and extremely complete with all the comforts. We tried out several of the dining opportunities at the hotel as well as the pool deck and none of it disappointed. If I ever were to return to Dubai, there would not even be a question of hotel accommodations. The JW Marquis Dubai is fabulous!!!
