4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012 via mobile

I have just returned from my 9th year of staying at this hotel. Over the years it has always been our hotel of choice due to its wonderful staff and excellent personalised service. I got married here and my children have been coming since they were babies, so it holds a special place in my heart too.
However it also means i have seen many changes and unfortunately a gradual decline in quality and service too. This year made this apparent. I stayed for 3 weeks so it was enough time to see many things. As a member of One & Only resorts you come to expect a certain standard, this year it did not feel like a luxurious exclusive resort. For a start the standard of people at this resort has dropped considerably, its almost like a cheap spanish resort. Theres no classy clentiele like there used to be. Its all about numbers now and filling rooms. Its also about neglecting repeat customers in favour of bending over backwards for new customers. A tactic to then make them too repeat customers who in time will also be neglected at some point. The family feel at this hotel has been replaced by business tactics. It was once about making you as a guest feel special and at home. You actually feel a nuisance now for asking or complaining about anything. Whilst most of the staff still remain excellent, higher level mgmt staff who have been there 5 mins act like they know more about the resort than you and are somewhat condescending in their responses. This resort has seen some excellent mgrs over the years who have been a pleasure to deal with so i know what is achievable and possible. Current mgmt lack assertiveness with unruly and un cooperative guests who fail to adhere to rules resulting in the resort losing its 5 star feel.

Certain furniture in the resort has been there since i first came 9 years ago, namely the lobby lounge, the carpets and sofas need updating and replacing as this area looks tired and worn especially compared to newer hotels lobby areas. The Gold Club furniture which is relatively new definetly needs review, the brown seat cushions on the chairs are poorly made and not very attractive, they look worn and certainly not 5 star or luxurious- more starbucks than a Gold Club in a 5 star resort. The carpets in this area are not regularly vacuumed as the same nut shells remained under a coffee table for 3 days without being noticed. Standards have dropped for sure, at this point i would award it a low 4 star based on the fact there are certain staff members that compensate for the hotels decline. This year we encountered garlic fumes coming through the aircon into our rooms, a large heavy wardrobe panel falling off and just missing my 8 year olds head. Over the years we have always had room upgrades, flowers in your rooms, toy camels & books gifted to us. This year we actually were told by new mgmt that this never happens....erm.....so im lying or imagined it?...The hotel needs to remember that trip advisor spills the beans, ive read reviews on here about how new guests were delighted with being upgraded to gold club and suites....oh yes...the repeat customers are just taken for granted now that they will return despite how they are treated. I must also mention the noise from building work being carried out on Celebrities restaurant, it was like being in a war zone. What should be a quiet, relaxing peaceful lobby was instead a no go area, something which should be told to travel agents sending guests to the resort. I was unable to spend much time here or host meetings.

Restaurants on the whole are still very good, Nina's and the 'Dining Room' especially. Olives is now a rather run down, cheap buffet, with some guests in their swimwear sitting on towels. Beach Grill is lovely as is the Jetty Bar and Eau Zone-although service here was much to be desired.

Its such a shame to have so many negative things about this resort as i do have so many fond memories of i just truly hope that they take time to review their changes and realise that sometimes changes are not for the best. A smile from a happy guest is worth more in the hotel industry than a few extra bucks from cutbacks.

My husband and i enjoyed 8 days at the Royal Mirage (Arabian Court) in July.
We arrived at the hotel early in the morning and were greeted with a much appreciated cold drink, cold flannel and a talk about where everything was etc. Our room was not ready until 3pm so we had a quick coffee in the lounge then changed straight into our swim stuff and spent day by the pool.
Restaurants are all fantastic. We had several great lunches and a couple of dinners in the Eau Zone. Lovely food and great service. We ate in the Tagine once which is located in the Palace - it was my least favourite meal but only because one has to come last! Had a great lunch and dinner in the Beach Bar and Grill, also at the Palace. We had breakfast daily at the Rotisserie which was always great - so much choice of pastries, cereals, fish, cheese, anything cooked - really good, and had one lunch in there which we found a bit stuffy for a lunchtime.
Absolute favourite restaurant was Nina's. Amazing food, great atmosphere, great service. A must if you like Asian food :)
It was SO humid in July - we never once ate outside..it was just far too hot. But we did make an exception for the Rooftop bar, just for an hour before dinner every evening. Lovely views and really lovely staff up there...knew every night what we wanted before we even ordered! Same for the bar directly underneath downstairs. Wasn't overly impressed with the Kasbar in the Palace...they seem to treat it like some 5 star club in London - we were told to move seats twice but security even though the place was empty!! Bit up themselves i thought. If you go anywhere, go to the Jetty bar a bit further along the beach...we spent many an evening sitting on the beach watching the sun set with a cocktail. Great staff there also. One of my highlights.
There is a shuttle that runs frequently between the hotels which we used of an evening for dinner as it was far too hot to even walk along. It's a shame the gym is located in another part of the hotel - getting the shuttle there is ok, but waiting for it whilst you're all sweaty and sitting amoungst everyone else all sweaty stopped me going again.
There is pool service available and you can get glasses of water brought over to you free of charge. The guys on the beach were great - always coming over and refilling your glasses - much needed!!
Room was great, everything you'd need. Turndown available. Minibar etc.
We had a wake up call the morning we left no probs.
Only thing i would say is make it clear that not all guests can use all pools. We had a walk along the beach one day and decided to have a dip in the Residence pool (we'd already cooled off once at the Palace) and we were told to leave in front of everyone. We weren't using any beds towels - literally 20 seconds in the pool. We were told when we checked in all facililites were available to us. Was not impressed with that at the Residence.
All in all a great hotel with great service and would recommend!

Very good hotel that sets an example for 99 % of all the hotels in the world. Good setting, beautiful gardens. In contradiction to the size it still feels really intimate. Fantastic service and nice amenities such as the gardens, the good restaurants and the pools.

Had dinner in Nina which was extremely tasteful and elegant. Also the Rooftop Terrace is a great place to enjoy a drink and the beautiful sunset over Dubai. We had the best experience from out whole trip to Dubai sitting on the Rooftop Terrace enjoying good wine, food and music.

Unfortunately our last morning in the hotel was not very good. We had to wake up early to catch our flight back to Europe. We ordered a wake-up call but we didn't get it. So we woke up 20 minutes later than planned. We had ordered breakfast in the room the night before, which didn't arrive. Made a complaint to the front desk but they said they couldn't give it to us within half an hour so we missed our breakfast. Not very nice in such a beautiful stylish hotel.
At check-out, the same front-desk employee was extremely rude, making phone calls and texting on his mobile while we were checking out. I think employees like him don't belong in 5 star hotels and give a bad taste to a good visit.

Apart from the very bad service on the last morning, I would like to go back to the hotel to enjoy it a for a few days longer.

We've just returned from our fourth visit to The Palace at the One & Only Royal Mirage in Dubai.

The Royal Mirage is actually three connected properties with The Palace, Residence & Spa and Arabian Court. On all four occasions we have stayed in The Palace but residents of any of the hotels can use the other property's facilities so there is a wide choice of restaurants etc. to choose from. The whole property is easy to get around and you can easily stroll from one end to the other.

What really characterises the One & Only family of hotels for me is the service provided by their fantastic staff. Everyone, from General Manager down to your housekeeper is incredibly friendly, always ready to say hello, have a chat or help you out with anything. Our two boys absolutely worship the chefs who make them pretty much whatever they want for their tea! The staff to guest ratio is incredibly high compared to European or US hotels, meaning there is always someone on hand to make your stay as relaxing as possible.

As a five star property the hotel has multiple fabulous swimming pools, gyms, watersports etc. etc. Everything you would expect in a luxury resort. There are many restaurants that cater for every taste, from a Mediterranean buffet to Indian, to Moroccan, to Asian fusion to steak / seafood and every point in between.

We have always stayed at The Palace and the standard (called deluxe) rooms are very spacious and beautifully appointed. Most of the year they have a policy of only allowing one child in the room with you but during very quiet seasons such as August this policy is relaxed so you can have two children in with you. On the subject of children it is also worth mentioning how welcome they are made to feel, with members of staff going out of their way to play with them. The resort also features a fabulous Kids Club which is so good that our two boys (6&5) actually ask to go there rather than sit endlessly with mum and dad in the evening!

I notice some of the other reviewers mention the half board offer. This is indeed well worth taking if available. Your dinner food is fully inclusive in some of the restaurants, whilst you also have the flexibility to dine in the 'posher' restaurants where you can either take the Table d'hote menu or you can have free reign and receive a credit against your bill.

Our first visit was probably 9 years ago now and a lot has changed since then. Initially the property was on it's own on Jumeirah beach but now it has skyscrapers towering over it from behind, and the view out of the bay is dominated by the Palm development and associated buildings. When we first went they were dredging sand up for the Palm and incredibly some work is still going on.

There were a few things on our most recent trip that served as warnings - alas not everything is perfect! They were pretty minor but worth mentioning. When we arrived we were greeted as having never been before, when in fact our last visit was January 2011 and as I mentioned, this was our 4th time. Not great database management! Also on a few occasions, and perhaps as a result of some cost cutting due to the economic fun and games currently, we found staff a bit awol around the pool and in one of the restaurants. Again, in a normal hotel you wouldn't blink and eyelid, but here where everything else is perfect you do notice.

Overall, a highly recommended hotel that I'm confident everyone will enjoy. We've been as a family and also for a romantic short break. There is something for everyone.

Room Tip: We've never had a bad one! Security is very good so a ground floor room with access onto the law...

We stayed at the Palace in a Gold Club room on Half Board - all three parts of this highly recommended. The Palace is impressive and the pools are superb. The Gold Club is a real bonus and the afternoon teas were amazing and being able to dine around on Half Board was a real joy. All in all, first class!

Room Tip: Gold Club at the Palace was great!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
One & Only Royal Mirage is considered Dubai’s most stylish beach resort. The resort is composed of 3 distinctive environments – The Palace, the Arabian Court and the Residence & Spa.The Palace at One&Only Royal Mirage conjures the magic of Arabia, a domain where guests may wander amidst the abundant gardens or stroll amongst the meandering water features. The property is generous, with 235 guest rooms and suites, on a private beach that offers rich leisure facilities, such as the impressive temperature-controlled swimming pools, water sports centre, tennis courts, golf putting green, ‘KidsOnly’ children’s facilities and, most importantly, a tranquil haven for rest and relaxation. Four specialty restaurants at The Palace provide a selection of distinctive cuisines: Olives, for a taste of the Mediterranean; Tagine, truly Moroccan, Celebrities for international cuisine and Beach Bar & Grill for sumptuous seafood and grills. The Arabian Court is crafted in the spirit of the orient with dramatic architecture creating symmetry, amidst a landscape of fountains, walkways and lush gardens. The subtly angled entrance leads to the impressive grand gallery, the vertebrae of the hotel that links the two wings of the property and guides guests towards the 162 charismatic guest rooms and 10 elaborately styled suites, all of which are facing the sea, with private balcony or garden patio. The three restaurants and their lounges thrive on individuality. These include a journey from the grand kitchens of the past, to a modern voyage through the eclectics and vibrancy of the Near East and beyond. The Residence & Spa at One&Only Royal Mirage belongs to the prestigious association "Leading Small Hotels of the World." It is an intimate sanctuary for those who wish to languish in the comfort of prosperity, with 50 spacious rooms and suites created with the finest detailing. The secluded gardens, pool and private beach offer an exclusive harbour, in which pampering is the predominant indulgence.
