We stayed in the Shangri-la in downtown Dubai for 3 nights en-route to Phuket. We felt the downtown location worked better for us with a short stay than being on the beach. Our Horizon room on the upper floor was immaculate and the afternoon complimentary drinks in the lounge a great way to relax after being in the city. Snacks/coffee also available during the day. We also had breakfast in the Horizon lounge rather than the main dining area and, though limited in range, it was a lovely calm way to start the day.

We didn't spend much time by the pool however though it is right in the middle of the city it is a relaxed oasis and would certainly be a great place to spend the day if the city isn't for you.

The view from the room out to sea was amazing and as always with Shangri-la, everything worked as it should and the staff were friendly and efficient. What I like about this group and this one is no different is, though it is luxurious 5 star hotel it is not pretentious so a holidaymaker does not feel out of place even though it is a business hotel.

We ate in both the Moroccan and Vietnamese restaurants and enjoyed both meals and also visited I-Candy, the bar by the pool at night. It seems to be well frequented by locals and visitors alike and was a great place for a nightcap.

All in all, a great stopover and I would be more than happy to stay here again. It also reconfirmed my positive views on Shangri-la as a hotel group.

Room Tip: Pay the extra to be in the Horizon Club. It's worth it\1

Stayed for 3 nights, in Dec 2012, on route to our honeymoon destination. Great location, caught the metro from the airport, straight to the hotel. Easy check in, room was ready early as we arrived at 10 am. which was great after a long flight. Massive room, and really comfy. Walk in shower, huge bath, sofas in the window to take in the futurisitc view that looks pretty unreal.
We had room service a few times and the quality was great. Ate in the vietnamese restaurant in the hotel, and had the taster menu. I could not finish it, as too full, but it was spot on, delicious. The outdoor pool was warm, and nice. We went to the gym that was very well equipped, and had massages at the spa One tip, allow enough time to relax after in the spa pools, steam room, ad relaxation area, but you have to do this without your partner as it is male and females separated. Not the most romantic thing when you are on your honeymoon.

We took the metro everywhere we wanted to go, it was safe and clean. The hotel staff are lovely, and very informative. service here is great. Everything you expect from asian chain. The breakfast had an extensive choice, but I found the coffee fairly standard. The pastries weren't too fresh either, but all hot food delicious.

All in all, a good choice for a stop over hotel, and not at all like the resorts there. So it depends what you are looking for.

Room Tip: high up, and facing the road.

We stayed at the Shangri La Dubai 5 Jan 2013 to 9 Jan 2013.
The service we received from absolutely outstanding. From the moment we arrived until our departure we were treated like royalty. The staff could not do enough for us.
We booked a room and were given a corner room on the 37th floor looking at the Burj Khalifa! Not the biggest room in the Shangri La group, actually a bit cramped
It’s worthwhile book Executive Club rooms as you get access to the Executive Club. However normal breakfast was fine.
The hotel itself is well maintained with a lovely pool.
The hotel is well located on Sheikh Zayed Road. It is located a few hundred metres from the Dubai Mall (free transfer from hotel). It is also not too far from most attractions. A great attraction is Kidzania in Dubai Mall where kids between 6 and 12 get to try out different professions in a mini town.
Its about half an hour to the souks and 1.5hours to Ferrari World. Completely overrated as only 2 roller coasters. The quickest one in the world is a mean ride!
I highly recommend using the airport transfer provided by the hotel.
From a value for money perspective, this has got to be the best hotel group in the world (we have stayed at a number of their hotels).

Room Tip: Higher floors and ask for a room looking at the Burj! Executive suite is a must

We stayed here over the new year for 5 nights with my two kids. We stayed at the apartments and as always it was spacious and neat.I would recommend that if you can afford it look at the apartment vs room option if you have kids. The kitchen is equipped with microwave, kettle, stove and fridge/freezer.The staff upon arrival were so friendly and the kids loved the attention when they were given welcome gifts. The room has a beautiful view of the burj and trust me we were so fortunate to have this as we spent new years eve in the comfort of our room watching the fireworks as my little ones did not have to be inconvenienced. The room was always neatened and cleaned beyond my expectations. The staff are so friendly and always make sure that you are receiving their attention. The room service was great value for money and I really enjoyed the taste of the food. The mtr is a walk away and we enjoyed taking the MTR to Dubai Mall especially with a pram and 2 kids.I did not partake of the breakfast as we made our breakfast in the kitchen of our apartment which was such a pleasure as kids were comfortable and felt like home. The kitchen was always cleaned up and replenished again. we did the dessert safari with kids( i know very brave). this was arranged through the hotel and was such a great experience. My kids are 4 and 9 and they both did not enjoy it as the bumps were to too harsh for them. The driver, Hamen was excellent and took it easy so that we could be at ease with the kids. The safari ended with dinner and a show and was so worth it for us adults. The only problem I have with the Shangrila is that the apartment was so lovely that it was hard for us to leave it every day. I would definitely be back as the Shangrila never disappoints!!!

Room Tip: Choose an apartment if you have kids as its spacious and they can go crazy in it with out getting in...

Cannot fault this hotel in anyway, from start to finish. Arrived at 3am and was greeted by a very friendly and helpful receptionist who accommodated all our needs for the entire stay. The breakfast, the rooms and the staff can not be faulted at all. The burger ordered from room service was one of the best I have ever enjoyed. Also enjoyed the fact that free wifi was made available throughout the whole hotel.

The shuttles provided to all the malls made up for the fact that the hotel is not next to the metro (5min walk).

Pleasurable stay and will return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing Sheik Zayed Rd, an amazing view.

My wife & I stayed there in January 2013 for 4 nights. The service is really wonderful compared from the other 5 star hotels.Friendly and attentive staff greets you right from the entrance of the hotel.Small attention that makes the difference. The main lobby is huge, clean & luxurious.Room is large with good view of Burj Khalifa , the tallest building of the world.L'Occitane's amenities (Body lotion, soap, shampoo etc..)are also offered. The breakfast is complete with international food.Fresh fruit juices and even Perrier are offered.Did not have the time to visit the spa & use the pool. But I guess they must be very comfortable. The location is quite OK.No MRT near-by but taxi services are widely available to Mall of Dubai & other Dubai attractions. Will surely stay again at Shangri la if we have the opportunity.Simply shangri la.
