We decided to dive in the huge 'Lost Chambers' Aquarium at the Palm Atlantis Hotel in Dubai.
It is a pre requisite for this experience to be qualified divers and have a diver card.
The experience is not cheap, but, having done it, worth every Dhirham!
On arrival you check in and get introduced to the dive master and his safety diver. We took our own equipment, but they had everything there if you need it, and it is included in the price.
We had a pre dive briefing and got our kit on - they set up our tanks etc. A quick buddy check and into the tank.
You are immediately surrounded by a huge number of fish (apparently over 210 different types). Far too many to list (!), but we saw multiple rays, some sharks etc etc. We slowly worked our way over to the Poseidon thrones and indicated that we should sit down. The safety diver then opened up a container of fish food and we were completely surrounded by feeding fish.
We were then led around the tank, looking at all the tourists on the other side of the glass (novel species!) and had a quick look in two underwater suites. Luckily, no one at home!
After about 35 minutes we surfaced and were treated to refreshments and fruit, while we waited for the 2nd dive. A further briefing indicated that we were going to feed the rays with squid, and exactly how to do this to avoid a bite on the fingers!
Down again, and kneeling on the bottom, we were passed squid individually, which we then fed to the circling rays. Be prepared to be jostled by rays, as they want their food! The staff did a great job of keeping them off our heads. After this amazing experience, we did a lap of the tank and the staff then sat us down in an updraft of small bubbles.
Surfaced and changed and the staff had arranged a hot and cold mezze with soft drinks. Excellent.
I have heard one customer has done the experience 11 times and (keep it secret!) when Tom Cruise was there for the Ghost Protocol Opening, he also did the dive and from all accounts loved it.
The staff are fabulous and make the whole experience safe and fun. They told us they can accommodate disabled divers.
Personally, I can't wait to do it again.
