We dined at Al Hadheerah as part of our stay at the Bab Al Shams Resort. We were a little hesitant at first as the price seemed quite steep but it looked quite good and by all accounts, was a bit of a must see.
The walk down to the restaurant was very pleasant – it was dusk, the camels and their handlers were out and the torches lit the way. Ideal photo opportunities! Once you arrived, you were greeted by a photographer which was a bit touristy as they made you pose for your picture. The whole area is quite mind blowing though. I stood there with mouth agape as I wondered around the food stalls, the displays, the buffet stations. The level of presentation and detail really was quite remarkable. We were shown to our table which was a lovely seated pit with cushions and pillows. We received complementary dips and breads which was a nice start. It seems that there are 2 level of waiting staff – those that run around and clear the plates and those that do the drinks. The drinks staff were a little slow and even just waiting for soft drinks took some time.
The buffet was really out of this world – everything and anything you could imagine from whole cooked lamb, to seafood, to curry to stir fry … even and Baskin and Robbins ice cream stand. Definitely something for everyone.
The entertainment was also quite good. My favourite was the guy who spins in the traditional “skirt” – and he keeps going non-stop for 15 minutes!! The dancers were also good, the belly dancer and the traditional singer were more popular with the locals but grated with me after a while. The highlight was the Heritage Story which was a production showcased on the sandune behind the stage. They had camels and horses and fireworks – a great way to top off the night.
I think it is something worth experiencing if you are in Dubai and want something traditional. Weighing up the cost, I think if you were to have dinner and a show tickets in most big cities, you would pay the same sort of price so I would look at it like that. Probably not something for traditional backpacker types. The locals seem to love it so it can’t be all bad!
