My wife and my two sons (aged 5 and 1) and I stayed in the Atlantis for 3 nights from the 25th to the 28th September. The Hotel opened on the 24th and to be honest you could tell!
Hotel
The Hotel location was great being on the end of the Palm. Our room faced back to the Palm and we had good views of the Burj and the skyscrapers of the Marina. The Palm itself is still a building site but you don’t get any noise or anything from the construction. There was a fire at the Hotel a few weeks back and work is going on in the hotel to refurbish the damage caused by the fire. This was quite annoying during the day with noise but should be completed in a few weeks time.
The buildings are very awe inspiring when you first walk in – very ornate lobby with a fantastic glass sculpture in the centre. The Lost Chambers aquarium is amazing and free to hotel guests. You won’t believe how many fish there are and you could stand for hours watching them swim around. The view from the hotel east lobby into the aquarium is amazing – a wall of about 25ft by 35ft of glass viewing onto the (apparent) lost city of Atlantis – worth a visit just to look at this.
Rooms
Basic, but comfortable. I would have expected a little more from a Dubai Hotel – they need to up the stakes a little here – for example no bed turn down service in the evening, no towels made into animals (!), no fresh fruit, a single wash basin in the bathroom, no branded towels, slippers, robes etc – standard fare at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel.
We had a Queen Twin room on the 5th floor. A nice touch was when we requested a cot for our son they delivered also a nappy wrapper and baby care kit which came in very handy.
Restaurants
This is where the Hotel was let down in my opinion. Breakfast was a nightmare: long queues for tables, poor service, lack of highchairs and poorly attentive staff. I hope this is a teething issue as it was unnecessary.
At Breakfast you can eat in one of two restaurants but they are both as bad. They are very slow at clearing and setting tables and the Management use crowd control measures by closing sections of the restaurant for guests to reduce queuing at the food stations. We only ever saw the restaurants ¾’s full but still very long queues. We waited at least 20 minutes for a table each morning.
The evening time is not much better. We tried to get a booking at Ronda Locatelli’s and were told they were fully booked when no-one was in the restaurant. We asked why the tables were empty and kicked up a bit of a fuss as the kids were starving after a long day at the water park. We were asked if we were hotel guests and after a bit of wrangling were informed at 7pm that the tables were booked for 8.30pm. When we confirmed we would be away by 8.30pm they reluctantly agreed to let us sit. We then asked for a highchair to be told they only had one, which was currently being used. We spoke to the Management and told them we were not happy as this is billed in all the literature as the family friendly place to eat – eventually they went to another restaurant to get one for us to use.
On the positive side Kaleidoscope is very good in the evening (a buffet restaurant with a good choice of food including dishes from all over the world including fresh sushi, freshly cooked pasta, Indian curries, Chinese dishes, Persian dishes etc). The negative for all the restaurants including Kaleidoscope is the cost. We ate in Kaleidoscope twice and had the buffet with a glass of wine, one beer and a fruit juice and it cost over £90. Food and drinks here are very expensive – more than in other Hotels in Dubai.
Getting out from the Hotel was a nightmare due to lack of cabs. If you found a cab they didn’t know where the Hotel was! This will change I hope as apart from cabs there is no other way off the island. They could do with running a shuttle to the Marina and back for guests. They are building a monorail to link all of Dubai, but this is at least a year away from completion.
Kids Clubs
The kids clubs are amazing with excellent facilities for all age ranges. There are two separate clubs – Atlantis Kids Club for under 8’s and Club Rush for 8 and up. The under 8’s club has a climbing wall, X Box, PS3 and Wii consoles, computers, arts and crafts area and a TV area. Club Rush for over 8’s has a computer room, night club, smoothie bar, games area with again Wii’s, PS3 and X Box’s.
Sounds too good to be true? Then it is as you have to pay for this - £15 an hour for the under 8’s and more I think for Club Rush. I think this is wrong, as at other Hotels we have stayed in the Kids clubs are included in the price of your holiday. If you have the money to spend they are great facilities to use if you need time away from your kids.
Aquaventure
The Aquaventure water park is great and we spent 2 full days there. Our 5 year old loved Little Splashers as did his little brother. There are water slides suitable for all age groups. My wife and I did take the Leap of Faith and lived to tell the tale! 5 seconds of pure speed to end up in a Perspex tube surrounded by sharks – amazing!! In Aquaventure towels are provided for hotel guests which again is a great bonus.
Dolphin Bay
My wife and son did a shallow water interaction with the dolphins which was a brilliant experience and highly recommended – but book early if you’re planning on doing this.
All-in-all we had a fantastic 4 days at the Atlantis and would definitely return despite the teething problems, hopefully these will be ironed out.
Definitely worth checking it out!
