Sofitel The Palm opened in July and our stay was in August. I was extremely excited to not only stay on the Palm but at a brand new resort. So what went wrong??
The Check-In ... wasn't as smooth as I would expect from a 5 star resort, yes it was late, about 1am, but there just seemed to be a lack of organisation. It wasn't busy yet there was too much fumbling around and we weren't even offered a welcome drink. It seemed to take too long for what normally should be a fast and efficient process, especially as I had all the required documents ready like passports and reservation confirmation.
The Room .... was faultless. I remember thinking to myself, this is why I paid so much to stay here. Sweeping views over the resort's pool and beach, The Palm and back to Dubai Marina. Modern decor with beautiful turquoise accents, a very comfortable bed, lounge, balcony, flat screen tv with extremely good reception, Bose sound system throughout the room, a minibar and some sweet treats waiting on our coffee table was a nice touch. The bathroom was massive with a large bath and a separate rain shower along with his and hers basins. Actually one of the nicest rooms I've ever stayed in.
Breakfast .... was an absolute debacle to say the least. Chaos, chaos and more chaos. I couldn't fault the selection of foods available or even the quality for that matter. But the service was horrendous, it shouldn't take 20 minutes for someone to offer me a coffee. I've stayed at many 5 star resorts all over the world and usually sip on a coffee within five minutes. Here's a simple 3 step process..... 1. You are shown to your table 2. The person who has shown you to your table seats you and immediately asks you if you would like tea or coffee 3. That person then arranges your selected beverage. It's not that hard!!! Waiting a further 10-15 minutes for the bill was also frustrating, especially as breakfast was included in our package we still, for reasons I could not understand, had to sign off on a bill for breakfast. We were assured that it was only for internal purposes and wouldn't appear (and didn't appear) on our final bill. Yes, breakfast was busy especially close to closing time but at 10:00am there was a long line of people still waiting to be seated. Like I said earlier the food and selection was extremely good with your regular 5 star resort quality. Egg station, juice station, pastries, local cuisine, cold meats and smoked salmon.
The facilities .... there is no doubt that Sofitel The Palm is an impressive resort it has a reasonable sized pool with refrigerated water, required especially in August!!! Sun loungers around the pool area are quite limited so get down early and reserve your spot!! The Sofitel offers a courtesy shuttle to Dubai Mall stopping at various places along the way, like Jumeirah Beach. I decided not to use the shuttle as the trip to Dubia Mall was around 2 hours. I could get there in 20 minutes by cab so was happier to pay for a cab. The price you pay to save an hour and a half.
The Location .... I most likely wouldn't stay on the Palm again. Yes it's close to Atlantis and the Aquaventure Waterpark but that's the extent of it. If you are planning to just chill at the resort then the location isn't an issue. But if you want to get out and about in Dubai then I would stay closer to the main attractions. It is good to say "I've stayed on The Palm" though.
The Check-Out ... was reasonably smooth with no issues.
Overall ... It's hard not to be impressed when you walk through the doors of the Sofitel The Palm. The foyer is grand as is the whole resort. The rooms are almost second to none and I was most impressed with the wall gardens. I just felt it lacked that Sofitel First Class Service (apart from one of the concierge staff who assisted us in tracking down a lost credit card). For the price you pay to stay here, and the extremely high prices of food and drink once you are here then I would expect more. Sorry Sofitel The Palm, I just didn't feel it. If I was to rate out of 10 then you get a well below par of 4.
