“Buisness Meeting and stay at hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

I stayed for 3 days in the hotel for business meeting in the hotel. Overall the hotel was very nice and I was happy to stay in this hotel. The stay was comfortable. The room size is good and clean and the hotel restaurant provide good services and good foods.
My notes that the hotel not provide iron machine in the room. When I came, I requested Iron Machine but they told me that we don't have iron machine but you can give us your clothes to press it and the second problem that the hotel couldn't give me the clothes before 8 AM and I have a meeting start at 7:30. So I go to the meeting with my old clothes :(. No Iron and No pressing early.
The TV remote also was bad and not work well and they TV channels don't show the Bein Sport channels to see the world cup in the rooms, You should go to the hotel coffee shop to watch the world cup matches.
The last thing, the hotel provide free internet but the signal is weak.

Room Tip: Select the marina view room.

The hotel is located in the middle of the desert. It is a good 10-15 min drive into the King Abdullah Economic city. Hotel is marketed as a 5*, but the place is too new and the staff lack the experience and training. Nice modern, large rooms, decorated to a high spec. Slightly slow wifi, but it was free. Breathtaking entrance foyer, if you were to look up and see as high as the roof, with the open floors. Staff lack general customer service skills, check in was slow and had to explain everything slowly to the staff, due to their poor command of english. In room dining food, below average, considering the high prices. Room does not get replenished everyday i.e. water, tea bags etc. Had dinner one night on the terrace, as this was the only place showing the world cup. Food was ok, service was a bit shoddy and chaotic. All in all, newly built hotel to a very high specification, but let down by poor management.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the lagoon, on the higher floors

On traveling to this hotel you realise that it is in the middle of the desert and on the beach. But not quite as they are constructing a whole new city the size of Liverpool around it!
This new hotel is very impressive. Built more like a Dubai Hotel with a whole height atrium and very contemporary design.
The comfortable bedroom was well equipped with a kettle (the slowest in the world) and supplies but no milk, hairdryer, fridge and WiFi.
The WiFi was slow and Skype did not work well enough to communicate but internet speed upgrades are available at a cost. There was no iron or ironing board in the room or available. After requesting one for 5 days I was always forced to use the laundry. This must be improved.
For some strange reason the bathroom was really dark, in spite of many dim spot lights. It was not possible to shave or use the mirror at all in there. Just needs one more powerful spot light bulb above the magnifying shaving mirror already provided.
There was some noise from the atrium at times, but not late at night. However there is ongoing construction and they were working right outside my bedroom during my stay on the hard landscaping of the driveways and garden areas. They start and finish with the sun rise and sun set.
I was there with a conference and the conference facilities were first class. The staff are superb, both in the conference area and the hotel itself.
All in all a true 5* experience, thank you.

Dear Mr. Ken,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on Tripsdvisor.

We really appreciate your kind and honest review of our hotel. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and that you found our hotel very impressive and our rooms very comfy and also our conference facilities to be first class.
In regards to the internet, as you mentioned above that high speed internet is available at an extra cost. Iron and ironing board should be available upon request and for that we would like to apologize. Finally, the lighting in the bathrooms have been improved since.

Thank you again for your honest review and we hope to see you again soon.

I stayed for 2 days to cover and event in the hotel.. I loved the 2 bed room we have got and the restaurant was nice but not perfect as I knew from other five stars hotels.. No activities there and the hotel was surrounded by sand.. No good view nor anything but staying in the hotel.. And the area is still under construction.. So it was like a five stars hotel on the desert..

Hotel
Attractive - however there are no activities currently in the hotel except for gym, jacuzzi and sauna.

Food Quality
Average if not disappointing. The quality of food has really deteriorated in the past 2 months. Wednesdays' 'Indian food night' lacks quality and food is very bland. Chicken tikka/tandoori is raw, meat is hardly succulent - quite tough and the menu lacks real variety. Thursdays' is BBQ night - it gets worse - meat is sometimes smelly, not marinated. We complained every week for the past 5 weeks only to be told that the 'butcher chef' is not available. Past 5 weeks there is no lamb chops available. Om Ali - everyone in the Middle East knows a good Om Ali - my westerner friend could not even finish a baby-sized bowl - this was rather disappointing to me on the part of the hotel - the su-chefs in this place are really taking a fat chance. Our consultants are currently frequenting the local restaurants/pizza place down the road which offer better service and food quality at cheaper prices.

Services
I hate to say this, but the hard fact is it is dreadful. We are a group of approx. 15 business consultants living at the hotel for 6, yes 6 months and working at KAUST. The football World Cup is currently going on, however, all hotel guests do not have the channel available in their rooms. One manager told me that it was too expensive to have the world cup channels in the rooms, hence this is why Al Khozama management opted to only have it in the following places:-
The terrace - works during dinner times (matches being played at 7pm and 9pm) - after that everyone gets tired naturally to wind-down in their rooms.
The gym - after 9pm there is nobody there although it is open - no seating place..?
The barber shop located next to the gym on the mezzanine floor - it's a 3m square room.
This type of shoddy service from a 'five star' hotel would not have happened in a place like Riyadh.
My friend (also a living guest at the hotel) ordered an expensive steak for dinner and he was refrained from sitting with us at the terrace, since he 'failed' to order from the short menu intended for dining guests watching the world cup matches on the terrace. I asked the waiter if we were still in primary school? as his steak was from the same kitchen and even more expensive. Unfortunately he could not watch the match and had to go and sit inside - one wonders whether we are all in Alcatraz. Because the hotel has no activities, we all anticipated that at least we'll have the world cup channel available in our rooms, due to the matches mostly being very late at night and also that Ramadan is around the corner.
Laundry is not ironed properly also - they fail to iron the collars, or some quick shoddy work.

Other negatives experienced by me and my colleagues, as well as other prominent guests who I know:-

Rooms do not get cleaned - bottles, cans are never discarded.
Tea/coffee cups do not get washed, left as is.
Bathroom towels/supplies do not get replenished.
Rotten fruit are left in the bowls until the guest complains.

Positives
Barber shop guy is professional, smiling. He cuts hair, trims beards exceptionally well.
Gym guy knows his stuff too and also very professional, smiling. Generally all guests are very happy after a long, hard day's work heading to the gym / barber shop.

I hope Al Khozama group/ management gets their act together. We had a food festival earlier this year at KAUST, who were the first we invited to have on-site to sell food/beverages? - Bay La Sun hotel - it seems they do not give a damn about business consultants generally living at their hotel, which is part of the reputable Al Khozama group.
NO WORLD CUP in guests' rooms - SHOCKING from ALKHOZAMA GROUP/MGMT.
I've never experienced this generally poor service and quality from Rosewood in Riyadh or other top hotels as I'm well-traveled in the GCC countries.
Maybe, we should find a real 5-star hotel or alternate lodging other than Bay La Sun...time will tell.

Room Tip: Lighting in rooms generally poor. However, the rooms are decently sized - opt for a higher floor as...

A group of us (16) have been staying here for months now. Although I did send an email complaining I received no answer so decided to tripadvise it.
The food is very poor and expensive in Saudi terms. The service, except for a few conscientious employees is rubbish. The wifi is unusable even to send webmail or browse let alone work or use facetime.
The bathroom rarely gets replenished and empties are left in the room. The lost goes on. Unless you have no choice, best find somewhere else.

My small family and I recently spent a night at Bay La Sun Hotel during our short stop in KAEC. The room was clean, well-lit, and very comfortable. The breakfast buffet and coffee menu were great, although certainly pricey. The hotel provides guests with tons of bathroom amenities other than the usual shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion. The staff were very friendly and most of the spoke English very well. Although there was still some construction going on, the noise level was not too disturbing in the room. I do however recommend the hotel lower their lobby music a tad bit lower, it seemed to echo all through the atrium and I could hear it in my hotel room at night. Knowing their great service, I'm sure this will be taken care of soon.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel, you have nothing to worry about!
