“Even on a Friday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2009

I spent a Friday in Aleppo but found plenty to see and do. The light filtering into the (mostly closed) covered souks behind the Umayyad Mosque was quite eerie but the souk opposite the Citadel entrance and behind the thriving restaurants was open and full of shoppers. There is a jewellery shop on a corner on the west side of the ring road around the Citadel. The owner spent many years in the U.S.A. and was very helpful.

If you love shopping, then you will love this souk. It is at the foot of the Citadel in the heart of old Aleppo and is miles and miles of labrynthine passages. It is very easy to get lost, but then, that is half the fun of the experience! You will also feel like you have stepped back in time. This marketplace has been around for centuries. Carts laden with goods and pulled by donkeys are how most shopowners receive their stock and supplies. The merchants are very friendly and don't be surprised if you are offered tea or coffee while shopping. Sit and chat with the merchant while you think about all the wonderful things you want to buy! And bargaining is an art form here- don't be afraid, but remember it should be done with civility - don't denigrate the merchandise, just be firm with the price you are willing to pay and if you can't come to an agreement with the merchant then walk away. You may find that the merchant will call to you to come back with a new price. But don't worry, the most important thing to remember when shopping in the souk is that if you like what you are buying and you paid a price you are happy with, then don't second guess it later! Most of it is about the experience of shopping in such and ancient place. Enjoy the experience!

“Every thing a pound”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2008

Don't get me wrong it is interesting but it isn't the best. There doesn't seem the right mix of touristy and local produce. You might think this a bizarre comment but there are only so many camel hair hats, buttons, tassles and sheeps's intestines you can get in your over night bag. Watch out for the Oscar Wilde quoting shop assistants, very strange. Enjoy getting lost and wander in the cool even when its scorching outside.
