The Sala Prabang is not a hotel in the conventional sense, but provides rooms in a number of different World Heritage houses in the town. Each house has a reception area staffed twenty-four hours. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable with good shower, loo and wash basin. Breakfast is taken on an outdoor terrace above the Mekong. The only slightly off-putting fact was the local, maniac cockerell, which first crowed at about 5am, and continued till gone lunchtime. Maybe someone will have eaten it by now!

Room Tip: Trust the management

We wanted a Mekong River view in Luang Prabang and there it was across the road! Charming colonial guesthouse feel, we had a room with balcony overlooking the quiet riverfront street with cafes across the road alongside the river. Greeted with cold lime and ginger water to refresh us, the staff were friendly and obliging, very little English but we no no communication problems. Room comfortable with fan and aircon but beds are hard everywhere in Laos. Provision of tea and coffee making facilities on the balcony was appreciated. Enjoyed breakfast every morning across the road by the river. Location was good, easy access to night markets and other places of interest in Luang Prabang. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: A room with a balcony overlooking the street is good. Nights are always quiet.

The hotel is a tastefully restored historic building on the Mekong river esplanade. There are actually 2 buildings that I know of operated by the owners - the building we were in is a newer addition. The rooms had white rendered walls with timber features - french doors opening onto a small balcony, timber floors. A beautiful recycled timber - opaque glass feature wall and sliding door separated the bathroom from the ample size studio bedroom which meant the rooms were very light. The staff were very accommodating and the buffet style breakfast which we ate at the other building 60 metres down the road was tasty. The only downside to our stay was the noise - the esplanade is very busy with cars , motor bikes and tuk tuks and as we opted for a river view we right on the roadside - this is not a huge issue - at night it quietens down and if you are spending time out and about during the day then you will enjoy your stay.

Room Tip: Wooden floors and recycled timber doors are beautiful but noisy - especially if there is a group on...

We arranged the reservation for this hotel ourselves, based on the very nice photos. When we arrived we were shown various rooms, all far from the charm and quality that one might expect having seen the photos.
. . . and the price they insisted after max. discount - as we realized the same evening - substantially higher than if one books with agoda or other booking platforms.

I stayed at this attractive guest house for 4 nights in late May. It is well located, being a shortish stroll to the key attractions of this charming town. It was clean and well looked after, with a good breakfast served over the road from the guest house on the river bank overlooking the Mekong River. The staff, from manager down were unfailingly friendly and helpful. I had trouble connecting to the wi-fi signal in my room (yes, wi-fi IS available in the rooms, contrary to one review) and after reporting same to the desk clerk in little time the manger was at my door to help me out. Criticisms -- room was on small side (OK for one person but would be a squeeze for 2), plus very little hanging space (only 6 coat hangers and no shelves/drawers to put clothes or travel stuff) so you have to live out of your suitcase, which for a stay of more than 1 or 2 nights is a drag.

Room Tip: Upstairs room facing the river offer great views of the river and chance to watch the slow pace of t...

We stayed here as part of a tour group and, having checked the reviews, I was slightly put off! I should not have been - It was delightful. Very central in the beautiful town of Luang Prabang, I can absolutely see why Travel Indochina, our tour operator, insist on using it! We stayed in one of their guest houses a short walk from the main reception and from breakfast which is served over looking the Mekong! The breakfast was lovely; the staff were really friendly; our room was spacious with a very nice, fully functioning bathroom. We stayed 3 nights and although we did have problems with water availability on 2 mornings after everyone had showered etc, it was not really a huge problem! After a night in Pakbeng the night before this was sheer luxury!!!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

we stayed here for 3 nights in April. It was clean, the bed was huge and comfortable and the bathroom was clean with a nice shower and definitely a door! We liked sitting on the balcony watching the world go by. Which as it's close to everything was a great way to relax. Breakfast with a view of the river was good and on the day it rained the covered courtyard was a good substitute.

Room Tip: ask for a room at the front with a balcony
