“Stunning!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2006

We stayed here after weeks of travel and mainly guesthouuse stays. It was a great treat! We booked through the hotel website and immediately received a response. We arranged for airport pickup and were greeted by a staff member and given hot towels on the ride to the hotel. Once we arrived we were given a delicious ginger tea while we waited for our room. We also took in some spa services. The staff and service at this hotel were by far the best I have ever experienced. The room and the hotel itself were stunning and conveniently located to the night market and many temples. I would definitely stay again!

This is a great local hotel in a restored property. I stayed in the low season and got a good rate and was upgraded to the Maison Suite which is huge. The staff are very frindly, professional and always on top of things. The breakfast buffet was excellent and included seasonal mushrooms which are a real local delicacy in summer. The grounds are neat and well groomed and all in all I would highly recommend this hotel. It is a ten minute walk from the action or a short tuk-tuk ride. My only complaint is that the air conditioner was too loud. In this day and age of highly efficient machines, it shouldn't be loud. That said, I would strongly recommend this hotel in the off season because of the great value. In high season when prices are also high, you should do your homework and check out other hotels as well. The biggest plus to this hotel is that it is a well-run, smallish, non chain-like hotel in the European tradition. Don't go expecting a five star chain and you won't be disappointed. I would give it a solid four stars.

  • Liked — Food and staff professionalism.
  • Disliked — Loud air conditioner.
  • Tips/Secrets — Bring ear plugs and an eye mask so that you can sleep in a little.

The Maison is a really wonderful property! We stayed at Settha Palace in Vientiane before moving here and would like to comment on the service. The reception staff are the most wonderful and genuine that we have met in our travels. They were really concerned about our well-being and were able to strike rapport with the guests. They really made a difference.

The room was very comfortable with a veranda. However, there isn't a bathtub, except in the suites. For such a wonderful hotel, it is really a great bargain (only $60 during the low season)!

The only thing which really does the hotel disservice is its spa. Avoid it like the plague! For that price, it really (pardon my language) [---]! The therapists were not well-trained (if trained at all) and the set-up was pathetic! Instead of rooms, they had tents which did not give you a sense of privacy. The masseurs did not know how to give a massage and were not caring at all. They did not offer us umbrellas though it was raining and was only concerned about us filling up the comments forms though the lighting was so poor that it was impossible to do. Additionally, there was only one toilet which is located next to the lobby. When you sit down on the toilet, you face the urinal directly and it really stinks! Bad design.

We would recommend the hotel but please do not use the spa. You would definitely feel very cheated.

This hotel was a Prince's residence and still maintains a French colonial ambiance. The room and ensuite were lovely - like in a magazine - and very comfortable - and although very modern had the right sort of atmosphere and were very clean. Patio doors led to a large veranda on which we could sit in comfy wicker armchairs with our g&ts and books from the little library area on the landing, listening to the cicadas in the beautiful well kept gardens with bananas, coconuts and orchids.
It is only a short walk to the banks of the Mekong where you can get a trip on a traditional boat, and only a short walk past the wat next door to the day market and the night market and many restaurants.
You have to allow for the fact that Laos is a country struggling to emerge from desperate poverty - like in Siberia (but tropical) you have to be tactful and careful.
The electricity supply is dodgy - bring a torch - the water supply is from the Mekong - this hotel supplies complimentary bottled water to clean your teeth as well as drink. The tv does try to provide bbc world etc.
Take soft dissolvable loo paper (available in Bangkok) - to avoid blocking toilet.
Hotel staff let me have access to their computer to check and send emails.
The service provided was faultless.
Everything shuts early and the lights still working go off by 10pm in Luang Prabang so after that there is nothing else to do but sit on your veranda with books and drinks.
We travelled to Luang Prabang from Bangkok by Bangkok Airways.

I stayed here in June after reading mostly favorable reviews. As it turns out the place was absolutely outstanding in every respect. Get the upgraded room with a baloney and sit on it and look at the pool and countryside. It is world class. I stay at many fine hotels but cannot thing of a better one. Everything was great from the room to the pool to the restaurant. Also another great thing about it is that it is only short walk to the center of town and the night bazaar.
I noticed some reviews complained about service. Well when I was there I saw guests were not tipping the staff or were giving them embarrassing small tips. Don't be cheap. When you eat in the restaurant there is a service charge included in the bill of 10%. But the food is so cheap. You eat breakfast in lovely setting for $8. The inclued tip is only eighty cents!!! Give the staff tips. These people are poor. I gave $2 tips ( they accept US currency there as readily as their own) and got serviced to death. It was great. I felt like royalty.
Second point is about the famous night market down the street from the hotel. Be very wary about buying the famous Lao Silk and silver from the merchants. They sell cotton, polyester and silk blends and pass them off as pure silk. This happened to me and my friends. Also the silver which they say is pure 70% silver we bought was silver plated. I found this dishonesty among some of the merchants very disappointing and did not buy anything else after I discovered what they were doing. So be careful about the merchants but enjoy the hotel and the country.

This is a great place in a fantastic town. The hotel food is excellent, especially the dishes that are native to Luang Prabang. The staff is friendly, courteous, and extremely helpful and accomodating. The rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable. The location of the hotel is perfect: a few hundred yards from the action in town; but far enough away so that it is always quiet. We will return to this place, I am sure.

The Lao people are among the kindest we have encountered anywhere in the world.

Our family stayed in this hotel for three nights, and felt this was by far the best hotel we stayed in ever. The staff were so lovely and friendly, they even managed to remember our names, and greeted us each time they walked past! We moved rooms on the third night from a second floor room overlooking the pool to one above the reception area into a suite. We decided that the rooms on the second floor with the veranda were much nicer, as you could sit outside at night and just relax, not to mention the entertainment of the monks at the monostry accross the road giggling everytime we walked out of our room. The hotel is well located very near the centre of town, and the night market, and to get a tuk tuk all you need to do is go to the front of the hotel-but make sure you get a price before you hop in otherwise you will pay top dollar. The breakfasts are amazing, and cater for every taste possible, as does the restaurant-one of the better ones in town. If you visit Luang Prabang make sure you see the elephants, all of which you can book in town at one fo the numerous places offering such adventures,we also enjoyed the boat rides around the surrounding areas. A place well worth visitng, made all the more special by this amazing hotel.
