“Circus show.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

I think it is a shame that such a religious ceremony has become a gong show with tourists snapping photos in the faces of the monks as they pass by.

“A must see, but at a respectable distance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

This is a wonderful tradition that is centuries old. Please keep a respectable distance to enjoy, and resist the temptation to buy an offering of sticky rice from one of the street vendors and try to participate. This is a serious ritual, and it does not exist for you to get a picture with a monk (This is very easily done in any of the temples). Definitely worth getting up early for at least once!

“Unique and most interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

It is worth waking up early to catch this procession of saffron coloured robed monks at six am. You'll learn why these 600 dedicated men spend time being close to purity in the mind and soul. The outside world contribute their guilt in the form of food each morning to these dedicated men. So they buy from busy smiling vendors food items as sticky rice, cookies, etc. and they drop them in opening baskets as the saffron robed men walk past them.

Most unique attraction, and a must not miss experience in Luang Prabang.

“observe at a respectful distance”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

Part of me wants to give this a 5/5 review as the tradition and experience are amazing. Unfortunately, there is another part of me that wants to give a 1/5 review as so many tourists ruin the entire experience.

Please follow the basic rules: observe from a distance, don't talk to or interrupt the monks, no flash photography, only give alms if it actually means something to you - not for the photo op.

If you do decide to watch, I'd recommend finding a spot further northeast or on a side street so that you can get away from the hoards of tourists that ruin the experience for others. We were fortunate enough to find a cafe that opened at 6:30am and watch from across the street while enjoying a warm croissant and coffee.

“STICKY RICE IS TRICKY”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013
