I was in Luang Prabang for eight nights. For my first two nights, I stayed in a very highly-rated (on TripAdvisor) lodging close to Villa Chitdara 2 that set me back $150/night. I didn't mind paying that amount, but I was not pleased when the owners and staff lost their smiles and barely acknowledged me after I asked if I could show a close friend my lovely room. The answer was, "Sorry. Our boss said only registered guests may see the rooms."
So the next day I began looking for an alternative. Well, I couldn't have been luckier. Not even 25 meters down the road was Villa Chitdara 2. I walked in and knew I had found the perfect place. Warm greeting, immaculate, beautiful view of the Mekong River, incredibly quiet, service that you would expect in a five-star hotel.
Mr. Vong, his wife Ms. Ti, Anout and his wife Lada provide service that is second to none. The price was 1/3 of that other place and I was happier and better cared for than I could possibly have imagined.
Yes, service is important - but equally important is the condition of the facility. The room could not have been cleaner, the bed was so comfortable, breakfast was served in the lobby area or on the river, whichever you requested. Laundry was taken out and returned the same day at the lowest price possible. Abundant hot water. Somewhat good Internet connection (for Laos). So quiet you could hear a pin drop. Strong air conditioning (a must for this spoiled Westerner). Modern bathroom with shower curtain and no water splashing all over the floor. Refrigerator. Lovely dark wood furniture. A more perfect location does not exist.
If I tried hard to find a fault, the stool at the desk was not the right size and the desk had a large overhang, therefore a person cannot sit properly for writing or using a computer. Am I being picky? You bet I am! If that's the only fault I could find, you can be sure that Villa Chitdara 2 is terrific and you'd be crazy to overspend by staying somewhere else in Luang Prabang.
By the way, sometimes I do not trust online reviews in general because it seems some owners encourage patrons to post reviews or even post reviews themselves. Well, no one at Villa Chitdara 2 asked me to write anything. In fact, I'm not even sure Mr. Vong and his staff are aware of this website.
So if you go to Luang Prabang, have a great time and tell Mr. Vong that Joel said "Hello".
