“In short- just average.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2012

In all fairness I arrived in the middle of the construction of a 2nd building or renovation if the 2nd building was there already. So I will not comment on anything affected by construction.

It's a fair walk to the main street. 15-20min, now back home this may be fine, but when your traveling and you need access to the main strip quickly and easily at odd hours, this place is pushing it.

The rooms on the lower floor do not get a good view of the river and you can hear every movement from the guests above. Floorboards. You can also hear the TV, talking and noise from where the staff have their reception and they don't go to sleep early.

I dd not experience any room service like I have in every other place I've stayed at in South east Asia.

The old rooms are showing their age, just the minimum and for the price it's just average. I can't see why Lonley Planet had it as their pick- to the point where I thought it was a knock off hotel.

Maybe I should have arrived after construction.

Cold River, hands down is the best place I stayed in Laos. There are dorm rooms, twins, singles and doubles to choose from. I recommend anything on the top floor. Beds are comfy, family (who live down stairs) are so friendly, and atmosphere is atmospheric? I was travelling solo and the second I walked through the door was invited to join other guests for a beverage in the courtyard. Beers are cheap, and you can eat all the bananas you want for free. Filtered water is free too. There is a lovely garden as well. The hostel is about a 15 min walk from the night markets. Also, the family puts on a free BBQ at sporadic times for all the guests which is really lovely.

Room Tip: Double rooms upstairs looking out over the garden

I've stayed all over SE Asia in the last 13 years backpacking, studying and travelling there. I don't make many recommendations and this is my only one for Laos. I have stayed here several times since 2001. What I really love (if they still do it) is for a small price once a week you can pay and eat a big Laos-style feast with the whole family which is fantastic. The children are growing up from when I knew them being much younger and they're great hosts too. For some reason it is extremely popular with tourists from Japan, not sure why, but the warm welcome and kindness to guests is something I associate with my time in that country too. The only thing I would say, is they are not keen on guests being out after midnight, and lock the gates up. I believe officially there's a kind of drinking curfew for farang but everyone knows the bowling is open until 3am and nothing more fun than getting drunk and bowling! So if you are young and plan on indulging in the night-life or being a dirty stopout you might want to stay somewhere more central and less traditional.

Room Tip: They're happy to show you whatever they have available so take a look around. And say hello from...
