Owner description: Elephant Village in Luang Prabang was set up by Markus Peschke in 2003. Our sales office is located on the main street in town close to the National Museum. Our beautiful elephant camp is located next to the village Ban Xieng Lom. Elephant Village focuses on three objectives:1. Saving Elephants 2. Community Support3. Nature Preservation. We take elephants out of the very dangerous logging industry and provide them with an alternative way of earning their income. We try to help the elephants which desperately need help the most. For example, older elephants and elephants which have injuries due to accidents. We currently have 9 elephants in our care. Our most recently acquired elephant is a disabled female who was injured when she stepped on a 'UXO' (Un-Exploded Ordinance) some time ago. She is happily living in our herd.

Definitely a must do if you like elephants, you can ride them, feed them and pet them. One of the most amazing experiences I've ever had :)

“If you want time with elephants, this is your company”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

We had an amazing day here. The staff were so friendly. We opted for a personal guide, Mangone was terrific. We also chose the one day Mahout experience. You can check out the website and other reviews, but suffice it to say - the staff here cares about these animals and take care of them. It's very clear the ownership takes their stewardship of the animals, the land and the people in the village very seriously. A truly one of a kind experience.

“Amazing experience you won't get anywhere else”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

My bf and I opted to do the 1 day Mahout tour and so glad we did! The day gave us an opportunity to get up real close and personal with the elephants - bathing them in the river was an amazing experience and riding the elephants with no seat (just sitting on the neck) was so much better than riding on a seat! lunch was delicious, waterfalls amazing. Your money goes towards a really good cause - and the day is great value for money.

“Wonderful experience at Elephant Village”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

We were a small group of 3 and booked the one day Mahout experience before setting off on our adventure to Laos. Our informative guide, Nick, picked us up right on time and shared his local knowledge and stories during the minbus journey to the elephant sanctuary.
Throughout the day we were treated as VIPs as Nick led us on a jungle ride, lunch at one of the private salas overlooking the river, mahout training session and then finished off with a truly memorable 1/2 hour river bath with the elephants.
To round off the day we then hopped on a small boat and meandered up the river to Tad Sae waterfalls where we spent an hour cooling off from the intense heat and humidity and enjoyed the amazing scenery.

During the day we met wonderful mahouts and took time to learn about their families and the personal sacrifices they have made to spend so many years looking after their "wives" (as they referred to their elephants!). They have wonderful relationships with their animals and we saw the mutual respect between elephant and man.

We were treated as though special guests and thoroughly enjoyed our day. Although the cost was significant we thought the value was incredible and would jump at the chance to visit Elephant Sanctuary again if the opportunity ever presents.

“Great experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

We booked the one day mahout training through the office in Luang Prabang, service at the office was decent. On the day we were with only four people, which may have contributed to us having enough time with the elephants. We absolutely loved the whole day, which consisted of an elephant ride along the forest, a individual training, bathing with the elephants and going to the waterfalls. We got the feeling that the animals were well taken care off and they seemed very relaxed. For example: the Mahouts were very active at keeping bugs away from the elephants and when finished the elephants were free to walk away but decided to stay with us for a while.

We read reviews about money begin stolen, we did not count the money in our bags afterwords but this would very well be possible as they insist you leave your bags with the staff. Therefore we would recommend not taking much (there is nothing good to buy anyways except maybe a coke at lunch). We did give our expensive camera's to the staff to take pictures with, which they did very well. Overall we would recommend elephant village.
