We did a half-day trip to ride the elephants here. It's about a half hour ride from Luang Prabang on a mostly pot-holed road, but some interesting scenery. The guy that ended up being our guide for most of the day was very difficult to understand (in English), but passable. The elephant riding was fantastic... once we got to it. Before doing so we had to go on a tour of the facility, including their new resort-ish area called "Shangri-Lao" (I kid you not), then a tour of the old beat up "vintage" cars the owner collects. Then sit until an elephant becomes available. But then the hour-long ride was a load of fun, the mahmout was great and took photos, we were able to feed the animal, ride bareback if we wanted, etc. Afterwards we were offered lunch and either a boat ride to some waterfalls or to hang out by the pool. This was sort of the "hard sell" part - they seemed disappointed that we just wanted to ride the elephants! Tip: go as early as possible so you don't have to wait for elephants.
