Owner description: Elephant Village in Luang Prabang was set up by Markus Peschke in 2003. Our sales office is located on the main street in town close to the National Museum. Our beautiful elephant camp is located next to the village Ban Xieng Lom. Elephant Village focuses on three objectives:1. Saving Elephants 2. Community Support3. Nature Preservation. We take elephants out of the very dangerous logging industry and provide them with an alternative way of earning their income. We try to help the elephants which desperately need help the most. For example, older elephants and elephants which have injuries due to accidents. We currently have 9 elephants in our care. Our most recently acquired elephant is a disabled female who was injured when she stepped on a 'UXO' (Un-Exploded Ordinance) some time ago. She is happily living in our herd.

“AMAZING, UNFORGETTABLE AND A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE WITH ELEPHANTS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2011

PLEASE do this with the Elephant Village Sanctuary. The money that you are charge goes to them not someone else's pockets. This helps support looking after the elephants.
Our Guide Burt was great, provided information on the way to the sanctuary in the air conditioned shuttle. We were greeted warmly and the staff were happy. I was traveling with a 15 and 11 year old and they described it as 'an awesome experience' they would never forget. We had a nice Lao lunch there. Firstly we went for a little trek on the elephants in a chair, then feed them, had a lesson on commands for elephants and how to get on and off the elephants. Then we were each on one elephant and went down to the river where we bathe them. IT WAS LOTS OF FUN. Laughter from all in our group. The Mahouts really cared about the elephants. It was so nice to see the elephants treated really well and in such a happy, environment. THANK YOU Elephant Village for the best experience for my family. We did the 1 day Mahout experience. The waterfall was great to do after the sanctuary to cool off in the water. My family had a great time jumping off the rocks into the cool water. The trip by boat to the waterfall was good.

“great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2011

The Elephant Village is an unbelieveble place. We think that it is the best Elephant Camp we have ever seen. We love the way that employment for local people and the highest quality care for the Elephant are presented in such a natural way for visitors. We can only recomend it! With your money you can do three good things, save Elephants, bring employment for local people and have a real good time!

“One of the coolest things I have done”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2011

I live in SE Asia, and took my two grown kids there for Fathers Day. Wow..is all I can say. They had a blast. The guide a lady named Porn, yes that was her nam, was very professional, and spoke great English. They taught you how to command the Elephants, and then let you ride them. You sit on the neck of the elephants, and put your knees on their ears. Riding in the Mekong River on top of them will go down as one of the coolest experiences I have done. We had a great time, and I am sure you will also. The lunch they serve is really good also. Then you go to the waterfalls, and cool off. On the way back you can buy fresh pineapple. The staff is really good. I can only say good things. I will do it again.

“Great way to get up close with elephants.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2011 via mobile

I did the three day elephant village trip and just loved it.

We bathed the elephants twice a day and rode on their necks for hours each day. It was a fantastic opportunity to get to know elephants better.

The accommodation was a bungalow perched on the river. It had nice day core but it must be said that it's open air so if you leave any taste morsiles out you will be visited by scurrying little critters over night.

Inaddition to elephant riding, we floated down stream on tubes for half an our each day. A relaxing way to finish the day and take in the activities of the local fisherman.

On our final day we had the choice of kayaking or hiking. We chose kayaking as it was raining. This was yet another great way to experience the river and the people that live along it.

Our guide was Yee and he really contributed to making our experience all the more special. If you decide to do the trip ask for him!

“Excellent animal welfare & new dedicated manager.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2011

A great experience only let down by 1 unhappy & rude (employee) guide who seems to have a problem with the new management. If you experience this guide, please let management know, as its sad to let one sour grape spoil the bunch.
The elephant mahouts are a great bunch of smiling guys that really care for their elephants.

A great experience with a company that is trying to give old logging elephants a warm & fuzzy retirement.
