“Great Laos Food, Reservations Helpful.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

Ate here 2 nights in a row, and was the best meal I had in Luang Prabang. I had the lemongrass stuffed with chicken and loved it. My wife at the Vegetarian Laap, which quickly became overwhelming with the amount of strong fresh herbs...perhaps we weren't eating it correctly, but it was far more pronounced than the Laap I had had the night before. The second night, we were given a tutorial on how to eat our dishes, so maybe that would have proved helpful. The sides were delicious and filling (we had pumpkin and green beans, both very good). I'm not sure why people are complaining about the tables across the street, on the water side. We ate there the second night and I actually preferred it. The watermelon chili granita is fascinating...try it.

“Great expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

This restaurant defiantly needs to be booked, so we did exactly that when we were disappointed on the first evening of trying. A very pleasant young man who was very helpful in giving us this advice. On our return, our greeting was very formal the following evening, by a mature lady who told us there was no room available and placed us across the road. Which was ok until we realised that other guest were being offered the option of having drinks there and being placed in the main restaurant when a table was available. The food was ok not sure that it lived up to he great reviews. The previous evening we ate at a traditional laos restaurant where locals were eating and I can honestly say that it was more enjoyable.
We chose the taster meal which included drinks and dessert. We were asked if we would like to order a dessert and needed to remind the staff that it was included. On settling the bill drinks were then added onto the balance. Would I choose this restaurant again? probably not.

Sally, It's true that to be sure of a table at Tamarind for a particular time, it's best to book.
Many people have told us they would enjoy dining on our riverside terrace. When you made your 7:30 booking the night before, we were already fully booked, so we opened up our terrace for several couples including yourselves. The people you saw waiting patiently were customers who had previously booked tables for 8:30, but whose tables inside were not yet free.
It was unfortunate that there was a slip up with the set dinner, and sincere apologies for that. It's also a shame that your meal did not meet your expectations... we do hope that your perception of unfair treatment did not somehow influence you.

“Outstanding Laos food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

WE came here on our first night and loved everything about the place.
Overlooking the river and very clean, it was the start of our love affair with this town.
we began with a great slushy cocktail they served and we really enjoyed the watermelon and chile flavors. Very refreshing too.
We continued with a Laos started plate that had like 4 or 5 dipping sauces with a variety of flavors and spices. Fantastic. SO great that their menu offered up several of these types of small portions of several local dishes, it really allowed you to taste and to learn about the local cuisine. Fantastic choice Tamarind
WE then had two of the recommended and most popular dishes:
Lemongrass stuffed with chicken and Fish in Banana leaf.
Both were fantastic, fresh and inventive.
The staff was great and being anchored down by a great young man from Conneticut in the US. Whenever the other staff members were having a problem with English or some translations he came and made things right. I found this to be such a great idea for a restaurant to have someone who really understood the challenges that travelers face with translations. There is one thing that continually happens in asia travels with westerners is the translation problems. Most of the time you can get by just fine, but several times the staff means well and so does the customer, but the little things get lost in translation. Sometimes this can lead to be disappointed and that is no fun.
So again, kudos to tamarind for having this young man around to manage and make everything perfect!

“Thoughtful & interesting food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

A training restau that has less-usual dishes, or new 'takes' on the normal fare. Starter/sharer plates are tasty and interesting. Staff are friendly (of course! This is Laos), enthusiastic and unusually well-informed and informative about the menu. The excellent Mike is patient, willing to discuss your choices and make recommendations.

Pleasant open terrace overlooking street and river. Fans but no air-con inside. It'd probably be wise to book, if you wish to secure a position.
