We spent 3 nights there in March. Like many reviewers, we have visited several other Amans. The thing I liked about this one is that it took over and perfected existing architecture, so it is not a cookie-cutter environment. The grounds are very peaceful. This resort is not isolated from the town of Luang Prabang, so you do indeed hear the sounds of the town (school kids playing, the occassional neighbor's stereo etc but nothing intrusive at all) but the second you cross into their grounds, a sense of calm washes over you.
We ate the breakfasts at the hotel and they were very tasty. We also enjoyed their ample and delicious teas in the afternoon. There were also never-empty cookie jars filled with great treats that I couldn't avoid. Given the variety of food options in the town, we opted to have dinner out every night and enjoyed all our meals (3 Nagas - the priciest of our 3 meals, Swiss House and Tamarind our favorite by far, but the others were also good).
I had a great massage and their "wet area" was the nicest I have ever seen.
We only did one of the trips on offer by Aman but really loved it. We went to the waterfalls and the bear sanctuary. As Aman guests we were given a special VIP tour of the bear sanctuary, including being allowed into their habitat (they were temporarily in cages) so that we could feed them by hiding their food throughout the area. Part of the Aman charge goes directly to the sanctuary as a donation (an idea we LOVED). It was a great day. Some other guests we met had already done several of the other tours on offer and raved about them all.
We took advantage of the Aman tuk tuk dropping us off and picking us up for dinners. An appreciated and very Aman-like service.
The desk staff were great and the head desk person (I forget her name) was terrific. We met the GM really only twice, but was very welcoming. An earlier reviewer made a comment about the level of service being just a slight bit below other Amans. I guess in a VERY slight way I would agree. It doesn't change my positive thoughts on the place at all, but there were a few little things. A few minor miscommuncations at breakfast, the pool needed a good skimming on occasion, not having the pool attended notice I was swimming laps and therefore having a cold towel and glass of water waiting at my chair .... (I sound so precious writing this), but it is indeed some of these little things that make the Aman so special and I'd say that they are 95% there but not 100% there. Most importantly, the staff could not have been more friendly and welcoming and wonderful.
We are very glad we chose Aman for our introductory trip to Luang Prabang.
