“Well worth a splurge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2010

I am a student and was traveling Laos on a limited budget. This restaurant was a special treat and well worth a splurge. The food was delicious and the service was as attentive as in a fine western restaurant. The ambiance of the restaurant is lovely. I would highly recommend a meal at L'Elephant during your stay in Luang Prabang.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2010

We had lunch here on Christmas day. There was a set menu, which was expensive and had pretty limited choices. Our onion soup starter was excellent and there was a great cheeseboard, but main courses and desserts were disappointing. We also found the service pretty unfriendly and the owner / manager didn't seem very interested in whether people were enjoying their meals.
We had high expectations, so perhaps this was part of the problem, but we had much better experience both food and service wise at the Blue Lagoon and at Arisai.

“Fabulous French Set Menu”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2010

It was lovely to enjoy a lovely french meal after weeks of eating asian food. We visited this restaurant after reading many favourable reviews which were all well warranted.
After perusing the menu we decided that the three course set menu of the day sounded appealing & was good value for money. All three courses were absolutely superb, especially the pumpkin soup served piping hot with a swirl of creme fraiche.
I would recommend this restaurant for a special dining experience with great service.
Be sure to book to avoid disappointment.

“Delicious and beautiful atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2009

Make sure you book here - we came on our first night in Laos and they were full. So we made a booking for the next night which was fine. BUt they seem to book up quickly.
We had a lovely dinner. The service was fantastic and our water glasses were never empty.
The food is to die for. The orange salad was a standout and the banana creme brulee dessert was also great!
The atmosphere is lovely - light and airy and very french!!
I would definitely recommend it for a lovely night out in Luang Prabang!

“Good food but not worth the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2009

PROS
- the pumpkin soup was outstanding
- the Lao espresso was presented well
- the cocktails were well balanced and delicious
- the coq au vin was decent but ...

CONS
- ...the accompanying pasta was very mushy (al dente probably happened 5 minutes before the pasta got pulled out of the water)
- the salad was seriously overdressed
- I really hate eating at places where there isn't a single woman visible on the staff. The place was TEAMING with waiters, greeters, bartenders, and trainees. You couldn't hire ONE girl??
- I understand that this place is trying to present itself as very upscale, hence the prices. But if you're going to do this, make sure you're near flawless. I've had better everything at
affordable prices (relative to the location) except for the soup.
