When we booked in for our elephant ride, I expected to sit on a seat across the animal's back and go for a walk along a path. My daughter and I boarded the wooden saddle across our female elephant, Kamdee, with our mahout sitting in the driving position on her neck. She thoughtfully placed one enormous foot in front of the other as she took her time to navigate the steep, muddy path towards the river. Wow, an amazing feeling.
Before long, the mahout hopped down and got my daughter to sit on Kamdee's neck. Oooookay. He borrowed our camera to take photos of us on Kamdee. Nice touch and lovely to have those shots now that we are home.
We ambled on through the river with the mahout sitting next to me. Easy.
Next thing I knew, we were disembarking at a platform. Ok that was great. Loved it. But we had booked in to bathe the elephants too so I thought, we will walk down to the river and throw water on them. But no, the saddle was removed and I was told to climb on to Kamdee's neck. Being a good girl, I did as I was told and the big girl and I headed down to the river for a bathe.
This was an absolute treat and highlight of our trip. I leaned over her head as she submerged her body, neck deep. All I can remember is laughing in delight, amazed to be soaking wet sitting solo on this beautiful grand creature. My husband and two daughters were similarly thrilled.
