“Friendly, relaxed and helpful!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2011

Khoune and Khone really know how to make their guests feel at home - Khoune ferried us around in his ex-army American jeep whenever we needed to get to town and Khone made amazing home-cooked food (try the fresh spring rolls!)

We were part of thier family for three days and when we left for Muang Ngoi, they bartered with the boatmen to ensure we didn't get overcharged.

They went above and beyond the normal service. A few more places like this in Laos would be very welcome.

NB: the most amazing setting and a beautiful view to boot!

As you bounce up the dirt track 10 mins from town in one of their cool old jeeps you ponder on whether you've made a mistake. If you want a sterile novotel with minibar and trouser press, you have. If you want to stay in a beautiful teak floored, thatched bungalow with fresh air shower room, a wonderful warm family, a host who has a million stories and a hostess whose attention to service is surpassed only by her amazing cooking- then you haven't. Our kids played with the kittens until all were exhausted and K&Ks kids took my 9 year old fishing on the Meekong with home fashioned bamboo poles specially created for the trip. Priceless.

I can't say enough abouy my time at Khoun & Khone's place in Laos. It really was a fantastic experience. From riding down a dirt road to their beautiful property, to going on day trips with the family, to eating home cooked (and delicious meals) at night, this stay really made our SE Asia trip. The beautiful bungalows and a peaceful property were also highlights. For someone looking for an authentic experience, I would highly recommend this place.

We found this little gem on Trip Advisor and were not at all disappointed. We were picked up from the airport in a little jeep and after 2 months of travel, were immediately excited about the prospect of not staying in a city centre. We stayed in a beautiful little cabin at the back of the property for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We loved getting to know the family, and being able to ask our hosts all sorts of questions about Laos history and culture. Khone's cooking is yummy and Khoun is a great story teller. We also did a bit of culture sharing and showed Mimi and Khone how to make little chocolate puddings. Transport in and out of Luang Prabang was easy and simple to organise with K&K. On our last day we went on a little trip to the waterfalls with Mimi and the driver Sunpawn (we think that's how you spell it) and then stopped in at a local village, (both of which we would recommend). K&K actually support a lot of the local community with things like malaria tablets, assistance with fresh water, nutrition etc. We would also HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you have the Laos BBQ one night for dinner - this was an absolute highlight and we loved being able to share a meal and a few drinks with the whole family.

This is not a place to be worried about checking your emails (too hard) or watching TV (you can't). Instead, you should be soaking up the beautiful location and enjoying the company of a genuine Laos family.

Myself and 3 friends stayed with Khoun and Khone for 2 nights in January and it was the best decision we have ever made. We wanted to do something a little different than staying in hotels our whole trip through Asia, so after reading the reviews we went ahead and booked it.

We got picked up in their Jeep from town, and driven through the dirt roads back to their place, even that ride was a lot of fun! It was very relaxing, the bungalows are very nice inside with a double bed or two beds, and a big stone walled bathroom out the back. Khone cooks amazing lunch and dinner dishes for a few dollars, there are hammocks outside the bungalows to chill out on, and for a small fee, Khoun will take you up through the mountains to the waterfalls, which are exquisite, and he took us to the hilltribe village and showed us around, which was something we couldn't really do without him. He is very knowledgeable and taught us so many things about the Lao people and his country. They will give you a lift into town at no extra cost, and can pick you up before 9pm aswell.

Staying with Khoun and Khone will enhance your Lao experience so much. I highly recommend staying in their bungalows and getting to know them over a few days, they are so friendly and accommodating, and will make your holiday so much more enjoyable.

We had decided to split our week in luang prabang into three days out of town and four in town. We choose Khoun and Khone after reading the online reviews and still felt some unease about the desicion on the plane ride, esp about whether the kids (ages 18, 14 and 7) would be bored.. However, from the first ride in the jeep from the airport, we never gave it a second thought. The kids (esp our 7yo) were treated like family. The food was the best we ate on our nearly month long holiday, my husband still has cravings for the red curry.

Travelling in the open top jeep was enormous fun (except for when the welding gave way on the front passsenger seat and left the 18yo with a very sore shin... The waterfalls are a highlight but we very much enjoyed being taken around the Hmong village and whisky village as well.

The kids were never bored, even though there was no tv and we didn't bother trying to access the internet. I think we could have stayed happily for one more night (esp as the hotel we moved to was completely awful) but it was good to spend some time in town as well.

We had two bungalows between the 5 of us. The kids bungalow was closest to the dining bungalow and the water pressure in the shower was far better than ours which was up the hill a bit. the views were wonderful however and more than made up for the dodgy showers. We spent a lot of time kicking back on balconies, reading and playing cards.

Khone and Khoun also have very friendly and well looked after pet cats and dogs. Very much a family home.

I wouldn't recommend it if you like travelling in airconditioned comfort, like access to the internet constantly and need large crowds of tourists around you. But if you have kidsa(or not), like really good food and great hosts, then stay here. Could not recommend it highly enough.

Everyone agrees that the owners are exceptionally wonderful people. In spite of being city folks, they have struggled to turn a patch of jungle into a B&B.

While I have a lot of respect and affection for this couple, I should warn visitors they will be staying at a decidedly inconvenient location, operating in a low power grid with dim lighting, sometimes low water pressure with luke warm showers on slightly chilly mornings. Also, Internet connecting is an adventure via a slow USB dongle that is used with their or your own laptop that offers email via dedicated email readers but you can forget general web access for practical purposes.

The folks have a great attitude in trying to jeep you in and out of town, but you need to determine ahead of time when you wish to be picked up - rather than casually stepping out on to the town and returning to one's lodging at a whim.

The food is very good and fairly priced at in-town rates.

Since another couple had to overstay due to medical reasons, we were forced to spend the first night in town at another B&B, the Hoxieng Guesthouse. We liked it so much we spent 2 nights before transferring to the countryside for 4 nights. In retrospect we probably should have stayed 3 nights each. One place had primitive, remote accommodations with great people and the other had superb accommodations in an excellent location at a minor upcharge but with flaky hotel management.

In other words, both places offering good if flawed values.
