“Quietly classy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2009

Had a lovely room with warm wooden floors, huge comfy bed, small TV and modern bathroom. All very clean. Staff were friendly and helpful. Great location. Handy for main sites, rivers, food options and morning alms round. Low season rate of $35 seemed good value to me.

My only criticism would be that the outside area isn't really used - except for breakfast - and there are no balconies or real window views. I'm still giving it a 5 but that's rounded up from 4.5!

I stayed here for 10 days, 5 as a solo, 5 with a friend. It is the perfect place to stay in LP. Close to the main street, but away from the hustle and noise of the night market. Quick walk to restaurants, massages, snack bars, wats, the rivers, etc. Somchit, the owner, was always very welcoming and interested in my adventures. Helped me when I had a brief illness. The garden setting is wonderful. Excellent tv reception. Free wi-fi. Very nice breakfasts. Helpful staff.

Luang Prabang was a wonderful surprise and the best part of the surprise was this perfect guest house. There was great pride in providing a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The room and especially the bathroom were spotless - I am bathroom snob. They were thoroughly cleaned daily. All rooms overlook a lush garden with a brick courtyard where a delicious cooked to order breakfast is served. Each room has a small fridge and bottled water is provided for free. A few steps to the main street but very quiet and calm. The owner and staff were very accommodating.

Arriving at the Villa was a lovely, peaceful change of pace after spending a few days in chaotic bangkok. It is quiet, well-run, and has beautifully appointed rooms.

Just being in Luang Prabang was wonderful!!The Villa Saykham had been booked by our Intrepid tour, so we had no idea where in LP we would be staying. When we arrived at the Villa Saykham it was therefor a nice surprise as the hotel is very nice and clean with lots of wood: flooring, furniture windows etc..It is also within walking distance of all the tourist sites and a stones throw from the main drag. The breakfast was adequate, allthough the waiting time was a bit long as it was only cooked on demand and then everybody turns up the same time!!. We had a 3 person room as our teenage son shared a room with us, up a beautiful wooden staircase in the main part of the hotel, on the 2nd floor. Very small bathroom, and hot water a problem but we managed! The first evening we went to bed unsuspectingly...at 4.00 in the morning we were woken by the loud banging of a drum....at first I had thought that the hotel was busy collapsing(!) until we discovered that our room was about a meter away from the huge drum of a temple located right next door!! Next morning we decided to join the monks in their early rising and went to give them sticky rice and bananas. Would not want to stay a week, though!!Good experience overall.

  • Liked — Good location
  • Disliked — Being woken by drum at 4.00!

Having been recommended this villa by another guesthouse that was full, we were absolutely delighted with our stay and consequently chose to stay longer than originally planned. Villa Saykham exceeded our expectations - Somchit, the proprietor and her staff were very warm and helpful and made us feel very welcome and at home. Tte villa is ideally located close to everything in the heart of the old town, but on a pretty side street that is very quiet. The overall ambience of the villa was charming and we enjoyed the lovely , cool internal courtyard and garden where breakfast was served each morning (included in price). The rooms were very tastefully and comfortably appointed with very appealing wooden floors and fixtures, very comfortable beds, immaculate and sparkling bathrooms, and we appreciated the small TV. The villa was very good value at $45 per night and proved to be one of the nicest places we stayed in on our holiday in Laos. (Donna and David)

Villa Saykham is quite new -- opened September 2007 -- and has 12 regular rooms (with single or double beds) and 3 "family" (triple) rooms. We found good reviews on Travelfish (it hasn't yet been much reviewed here yet). The lodgings, location, and service exceeded our expectations; it was the nicest lodging of our Laos trip (including stays at the very pleasant Ban Sabai bungalows in Vang Vieng and Chanthapanya Hotel in Vientiane). First, location without street noise: it's on a quiet side street just off the main street for dining, night markets, etc., and the regular rooms face a garden, with a wat on the other side. The triple rooms are above the lobby and face the side street. We heard the wat's gongs and songbirds in the morning, but no traffic or (as happens throughout the town) construction noise. Second, the lodgings are a cut above: our upstairs corner room was spacious, spotless, and sunny, with charming decor: wood floors and ceiling, firm beds with crisp sheets, wood furniture, and hand-carved trim. Everything is pretty new, so no problems with aging or moldy this-or-that. Breakfast is cooked and served on the sunny patio. Third, service: the staff (a small staff, some doing double duty as cook/server/room upkeep) was always smiling and sweet. The proprietor was pleasant and helpful with email reservations, local advice, small requests, and arranging airport dropoff.
It's worth the money (at $48 USD it's probably mid-range for Luang Prabang). When we went in early January, it was not quite full. We extended our original reservation after liking it so much. Note: the management will tell guests when the wat next door is expected to have early morning bells, which can wake one up (but are taken in stride, with many of the town's 22+ wats set in the guesthouse part of town).

  • Liked — serene charm in a central location
  • Disliked — nothing
