“Kindness and smiles for a pleasant stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2014

My husband and I spent two nights at the Red Canal and we were greeted by every comfort and kindness from the staff. The kindness for the customer is essential in a good hotel and the Red Canal have a lot of it to offer. We recommend it, we had a great time.

We knew this hotel during a holiday in Myanmar, and we were just amazed by the kindness and courtesy of the staff. The service is impeccable, the rooms are comfortable and equipped with many amenities and above all very clean.During our stay we ate only tipycal food (indian, birman and cinese), and we found everything very good and cooked very well. Only the location of the hotel is not the best, in the center of Mandalay, which is a very noisy city. But for the rest is a great choise for your holiday in Myanmar.

We stay in ( Hotel by the Red Canal) for 4 nights. It was really nice and valued our budget what we pay for. We had breakfast included and all the staff were very helpfull and take care of us. We also have strong wifi connection in our hotel room. We will come back this hotel for sure in our next trip.

We stayed three nights in April ( it was hot!) but thankfully they have a pool, not big by any standards, but without it you'd be sweltering! Our room was on the first floor overlooking the garden and pool, we didn't have the noise issues that others suffered at the back. What made this hotel for us were the staff who were so sweet and put in a great effort decorating our room. Although the bed is two singles pushed together it didn't feel uncomfortable and the air con worked perfectly. The bathroom is small but nicely designed with wooden paneling and pebbles. There was a small balcony with a bench on it for you to look towards sunrise. The breakfast was good, all you needed. The only down side is the cocktails, as you expect a lovely long cool ice filled glass but end up with a short tumbler with no ice (probably due to most tourists apprehension on drinking with ice in this part of the world) in the heat the drinks warm up fast unless you drink even faster! I suggest you request a tall glass with ice when ordering cocktails....we did and it was worth it.
Dinner was good, huge portions! If you order western food be prepared for a different version to what you expect...it is their interpretation. However the local dishes were delicious.
If you get the right room location overlooking pool/garden then I can highly recommend this hotel. It has a lovely atmosphere, more like visiting a friend (with great housekeeping) than staying at a hotel!

We truly enjoyed our stay in Red Canal. Staff greeted us with a cold towel and drinks upon arrival. Check in was handled promptly. The manager accompanied us to our room and explained the amenities. We were surprised to get a complimentary wine. Unexpected but truly appreciated.
We had the Kachin suite at the ground floor. Room was a bit on the small side. There was a pillar at the foot of the bed which kind of blocks access to the left side of the bed.
Room had an outdoor shower and a water falls.
Service was very good. The manager was very helpful in providing information about buses to Bagan and places to see in Mandalay.

We rented bikes at the hotel to go around the sites. The bikes are very old and brakes would emit a screeching noise whenever It was used It cost 5,000kyat/day which I think is severely overpriced given the condition of the bikes. We rented the van from the hotel to go to U Bein bridge for 25,000kyats. Driver would take you to a bunch of shops before proceeding to U bein bridge. You can ask the driver to skip this if you wish to.

Hotel had cocktails on our second night. Not sure why we didn't get it on our first night. They served cocktails and some nuts and fish crackers.

Hotel took care of purchasing our bus tickets which really save us some time since the bus station was a bit far.

The Indian food was superb albeit pricey. We paid US$42 for a meal for two. Serving was on the small side. The naan bread looked and taste more like roti. Lassi was US$4! Breakfast was okay. Limited choices but the juices were fresh.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. Service was superb. The staff was really very friendly and accommodating. We had a little bump at check out. Hotel did not call a taxi in advance despite our request for one the previous day. Since we were running late and we couldn't wait for a taxi, we had to take the hotel van. The manager lowered the price to 12,000kyat. They apologized for the miscommunication. The driver made sure that we made it to the bus station on time.

We liked the location of the hotel. It's very quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Downside is limited choices of restaurants. We had dinner at the nearby Cafe City since we didn't want to deal with negotiating taxi fares. Just like in Yangon, taxis do not have meters and they tend to overcharge tourists.

This hotel is very small, the rooms (Shaun Room) are awkward and the beds are horrible. One family in the pool and it is overcrowded and the food was horrible. What makes this hotel is the wonderful staff. At the time I stayed there, the hotel was fully booked, so when my air-conditioning broke, I couldn't move to another room, however, the staff did their best to fix the matter. If I went to Mandalay again, I would choose another hotel and I would not stay there again. I think this hotel is overrated on tripadvisor, but maybe some people like the quaint feel of the hotel, but I felt sort of claustrophobic.
