“Screaming loud speaker monk 5AM to 8AM daily!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2006

Remember all of Myanmar is CASH ONLY including hotels!!! For a huge hotel like Mandalay Hills, their prices, what they call "plus plus" added taxes and fees, an average meal is about $30.00 for bread and water, don't go for the buffet $150.00 set back and it is really fly infested in the morning and totally we got Montezuma's revenge for 3 days. Worse was the hotel room. It's ok, not what you think of when you see the lobby area but it's morning prayer service that happens EVERY DAY to get the local villagers up to feed the monks. Begins at 5AM. You're thinking of lovely temple Tibetan type, WRONG!!!Some guy with a loud speaker intoning in a monotone horrible horrible, wicked headache. Can't escape. Didn't try the Sedona, but at least it takes credit card, a plus as you'll need it if you plan on doing any site seeing. Also, Leave Mandalay as fast as you can and get yee out to any other city.

Good hotel located at the foot of the Mandalay Hill in the centre(-ish) of the city. This is definitely the best hotel in town (I checked out the competition - the Sedona Hotel - which, although was good, was not as good as the Mandalay Hill resort). Everything is only minutes away by taxi. The hotel itself is located in beautiful gardens and has an excellent pool and fitness centre, tennis courts etc. Bicycles are provided free of charge. The staff are wonderful and helpful. Rooms are atypical of any 4 star hotel around the world. Comfortable beds, large clean bathrooms with good amenities and excellent satellite TV channels. Get a room at the back of the hotel facing Mandalay Hill for the best views. The buffet breakfast is excellent and will fill you up for the rest of the day exploring this city. My only complaint is that there were 3 dead flies on my window ledge which remained there throughout my 4 day stay. The housekeeping staff need to be more thorough.

An excellent choice for Mandalay. The location is directly at the foot of Mandalay Hill. That means in just minutes you can be at the stairway that leads to the top of the hill. You are also very close to the Royal City. If you request a room at the back, you will get a dramatic view of the hill (as well as a fine view of the back resort area: pool with lounge area and performance areas, all lit nicely at night). The restaurant is quite good for Myanmar and the staff are helpful. In fact, staff in general are very helpful and eager to please. There is a fine bar off the lobby and a spacious, grand lobby in which to enjoy national classical music elegantly played by local musicians. The lifts are a bit small and during rush times you might wish to take the stairs down. They offer a fitness center with cardio equipment as well as some weight machines. The hotel also provides a decent bookstore and souvenir shop that is open in the evenings. The culture show (with dinner) is very touristy and may prove trying to the uninitiated as the music seems overly repetitive, but older folks seem to like it. The guestrooms are large and welcoming, though it is definitely time for them to change the carpeting....both in the rooms and in the hallways. In humid climates carpeting goes bad more quickly than in dry climates so it's hard to blame them for not rushing to do it, but still, it needs to be done. Bed linens are fine, but mattresses could use a turn....ruts can be felt on some beds (not so bad for single travelers, but irksome for couples who must decide who gets the rut). Bathrooms are ample and well appointed. It should be noted that this hotel is popular with the "in" crowd. While I was there it was filled with racecar drivers doing a cross country jaunt. It was also overflowing with the paparazzi who follow them. (I was blinded from flashbulb flicker by the time I entered the lobby.) Thus, it fills quickly and you should book early to avoid disappointment. One warning: During the late part of November, there is a special festival and the monks on the hill play a recording (about a 10 second loop) of a monk chanting....and they blare the recording 24 hours a day, making sleep impossible if you are in a room in the back - the windows are single glaze. So bring earplugs if you are planning a late November visit.
