“Awesome Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2012

Stayed for 2 nights. The hotel is located at the foot of the Mandalay Hill. The deluxe rooms face the Hill and one get a good view of the Temple On the Hill. At night its lighted.
The rooms are large and spacious. Bed is comfortable. Wifi is available in the lobby, coffee house and its free. The hotel grounds is beautiful. Breakfast is elaborate and good. Staff is attentive and overall good experience. A little away from the city but still its a good place to rest at night.

An unusual experience in Myanmar. The room was of a good standard and spacious. Frequent, yet brief, power cuts made taking the lifts more of an adventure than usual. Breakfast buffet very good. We visited the cocktail bar in the early evening and were asked how many were in our party, then determinedly directed to a table with just the seats for the two of us despite the bar being all but empty - different. That said the band that played was excellent with both Myanmar and western rock played plus jazz - the head barman joined in and took a turn at lead guitar with good results. Outside, round the swimming pool the Miss Loy Krathong 2011 beauty contest took place with an English speaking compere. All in all, a good hotel yet very different from the Myanmar culture of other hotels that we stayed at.

Room Tip: North side for a view of Mandalay Hill and the golf range and course, south for the city and over to...

The first sight of the hotel and the heart rather sinks as it looks like your bog standard international city centre hotel (think Sheritan, Incontinental etc) and the reception rather re enforces the view – great for a business trip but not for a holiday. Don’t be put off though, our room was great and was both large and had windows on 2 sides giving great views over Mandalay. Out the back of the hotel there were nice large gardens and very pleasant swimming pool and tennis courts.

The first night we had the BBQ in a garden together with culture show. Probably not very authentic but good fun and good simple food for not a lot of money. The second evening we took the buffet in the main restaurant that was both excellent and huge. The entertainment was provided by an American guest complaining loudly that her hamburger (off the al a carte) was not like ones in America – why could that be?

The Kipling bar was lively in the evening with music provided by a local band with more enthusiasm than talent but definitely part of the travel experience.

Breakfast buffet also huge and excellent and happy to service us 15 minutes before opening time (4:45!)

A great base for visiting Mandalay.

Room Tip: Suspect they are all the same with the excpetion of the corner rooms of each floor with 2 windows.

This was quite a nice hotel, slightly better than average by North American standards, and quite good. The room was functional, the bed was quite comfortable, air conditioning was loud and hard to control. The bathroom was not great - shower was ok, but not very good water pressure. Great breakfast buffet, very expensive bar, Kiplings, which was quite nice, but not much ambiance - there was hardly anyone in there most of the time, the band was quite good. The pool area was lovely. It is a bit far from town so hard to walk around and you tend to be stuck there in the evening unless you take a cab, which is easy to do, but it is sometimes nicer to walk. You're definitely removed from the town area.

Mandalay is the second city of Myanmar, after Yangon. Being closer to the center of the country, it stands at the crossroads, so to speak. You cant avoid it, if you wish to go to Bagan, or Inle or Pindya.
As a stop over hotel, the Mandalay Hill Resort more than serves its purpose. The hotel is located an hour away from the airport, but that's because the new airport was built some distance away from the city. As a result, it serves as a convenient hub to visit Amrapura, Mingun and Inwa which lie in reachable proximity to Mandalay.
The hotel itself justifies the resort status. The large swimming pool opens to a back garden, where dinners are served al-fresco, accompanied usually with a cultural show. One of our fellow tourists claimed that the pool-side barbeque was the best he had outside Australia. Although we ate in different restaurants in the city, the hotel's buffet breakfast was a commendable spread. Look out for a little trolly at the back of the breakfast which serves Burmese breakfast foods. Very interesting, and worth a try. At dinner, one night, we had canapes served as a hot dessert at the dessert counter.
The swimming pool is large, and you can swim up to the bar and order drinks and sip them as you sit on the water- stools. The staff is helpful, and speaks English. Its a good walk around the hotel garden , and the spa, hidden in the trees behind the pool, is built on water. The oriental theme is accented, but the treatment was appreciated by our friends, who traveled with us.
There are tennis courts, and a gym, but the equipment is not in the best conditions, and it is better to just walk around the property for exercise.
We found the rooms adequate, the bath linen all right, but the lighting very dim. The room should have had at least one good lamp. The luggage delivery and collection was a tad tardy. The reception, mostly efficient, had a thing about accepting U.S.dollars that were folded. They would take only crisp, uncreased notes. But that was so almost everywhere in Myanmar.
We recommend the hotel as an excellent base hotel or a transit hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool facing room

This is probably the highest star rating of the 4 hotels we had on our tour. It has a great foyer area with high ceiling. The room is nice but really cramped even for 2 single beds. Our Group took 3 rooms. Two rooms complained of uncontrollable air-conditioning. It was so cold that you had to turn it off eventually. Reporting this to the Reception did not get any results the following night. The third room complained it was too warm!!
The best part of this hotel was the marvelous buffet breakfast each morning. The variety and quality was really wonderful. Good chance to try the local noodle soups here. And good coffee!

Room Tip: Ask them for a room with good air conditioning control!!
