“very dangerous”

lot of strangers will stop you to sell you all kind of rubbish, fake gold, jewellery. Try to ignore them with short thank you and smile. Some of them can be very aggresive

“nice experience but not for the faint hearted!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

we went twice to the medina in sousse on our holiday, we made sure we kept our belongings and valuables very close to us as we had been warned about possible thieves however did not experience that, what we did encounter was people trying to befriend us (which we fell for) and shelter us from all the haggling that was being thrust in our faces, little did we know this was a good ploy to "shelter" us in their shop and then make you feel they have helped you, yes you guessed it again a way of getting a sale.
Living in Britain we are not used to such a hard sell and they really don't like taking no for an answer we had everything thrown at us "cheaper than primark" " we are not doing well in business please buy something will feed my family" "you are english we love the english" and so it goes on.
To be fair we were slightly disappointed that most stalls were leather handbags or Hello Kitty items (currently the obsession in Tunisia!!) we were looking for children's toys like traditional dolls etc and could not find any in the medina.

It is worth a trip to visit but not if you don't like people hassling you. I wouldn't say the prices were good neither as all the items i had spotted in the shops near our hotel (like ICE watches etc) were actually dearer on the medina.

“Get to know things to buy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

At the entrance to the medina you will find the Soula Center. If this is your first visit it is a good idea to go in to this shop. Everything is sold on a fixed price basis. This will give you a good idea on how much to pay for merchandise on sale in the medina.Make sure that you haggle a price well below these prices. This is not just my advice but I have often heard couriers say the same thing to their clients.

We went late afternoon which was probably a mistake, i didnt feel very comfortable as there were not many tourists about and the local traders were desperate to get you into their shops, go earlier in the day
