Travelled to Tour Khalef on the 17th March for a week. Myself, 4 year old son and parents
Rooms - we where very happy with our room an interconnecting one both rooms where exactly the same. We where expecting one bathroom, wardrobe. The rooms had good sized bathrooms with hairdryer (i noticed another review further down said no hairdryers!) wardrobe space was more than enough, beds where a little uncomfortable but they normally are (I heard others complaining and the staff swopped them straight away). Plenty of floor space for suitcases. TV in rooms never watched it, table and chairs in room with another on balcony. Key locking system, which the keychain is massive but we left behind recption most of the time. My parents had a few problems with leaking toliet and balcony door not locking but they where up at the room within 10mins of phone call to reception.
Welcome meeting - next day 10am whcih annoys me i like it wehn they carry it out on arrivals get it over and done with. He was very infromative about the area and customs. The only thing we where very annoyed at and i want to warn others is in the meeting he had a another guy helping him had out leaflets and pens tall guy, slim with a tash he mentioned in the meeting he offers a free trip to the medina after the meeting i asked about the boat rides he informed me they no longer carry these trips out but pointed me int he direction of his friend he would beable to assist. I ask this guy he said he could pick us up Wednesday at 8.30am go to medina they drop us off at the boats and we make are own way back no charge other than boat and taxi back. Wednesday we waited in reception he turned up in a people carry with him self and two other arabs at this point i was worried us 4 where squashed in the back surrounded by these guys, then on the journey to back end of beyond we picked up another arab woman, stopped off for the driver to drop something off then carried on after about 40mins not knowing where the hell we are and me planning my escape in my head! We stopped at what was the womans rug shop then would not take no for an answer and forecd me and dad down stairs to two women sat making a rug we had to tip them, quickly got back upstairs got my family and went outside no taxis, didnt know were we where reluctantly got back in the bus. Next stop the medina he directed us to certain stalls i am guessing some family or friends of his in the end my mother who cannot walk on inclines we refused to go any further he dropped us at the taxis and left not a very happy man! My advice to anyone is DO NOT APPROACH this man you can as we found book plenty of trips at the marina yourself. They is another review further down who experienced this aswell. Thomson rep should not be advising this but he is also a local and probably getting some sort of profit from it.
Dining - I am quiet a fussey eater when at home, but the food my opinion was great! Breakfast time i normally ventured for a boil egg, toast, pancakes, crossaints. Not to daring ha. Dinner time was better than tea time i thought lots of salad, bread, veg, meat (only tried the chicken which was fine) loved the potatoes, fish, chips, pastas. Tea time they had some theme nights cant say i noticed it all seemsed the same sort of thing to me! Deserts where the usual sticky cakes in these countries but some where very nice one thing that attracted all kids and grown ups was the ice cream. Main thing was no stomach upsets to report from any of us!
Pool - There is only one pool at the Tour Khalef not very big but the time of year we travelled it was fine the hotel was quiet empty i wouldnt like to around it in summer time. It had quiet a shallow part for kids which was great as it had a barrier at either end stopping the kids desending into the larger areas.
The pool area was very clean, sunlongers where easy to get and security brought you the sun mats. There is a shop near the pool selling inflatables, buckets etc a cafe which is a pay one and the outside bar which i believe only to open 10am - 5pm.
Some guys keep coming round trying to sell bloody camel trips over and over again found this very annoying, the hotel should not alow it.
Beach - is lovely nice white sands, the wind was a bit rough on some days so waves to high, beach bar never open on our week one day the roof had been taken down not sure if they are renovating it? Me and my dad went for a walk further up the beach it is very rough, mucky, litter even an abandoned hotel all boarded up cannot be seen from this one though. A few people trying to sell cigs, head scarfs just ignored them.
Outside the hotel - Very close to shops, cafes, bars we went into port el kantaoui quiet a few times. A taxi ranges from 5-8dinar do not except the meter excuse say before you get in the taxi how much now! The marina is great loads of yatchs, boat rides which are massively cheaper than booking with your holiday rep we went on the pirate boat cost 45dinar for all four of us two hours dinner on board and saw the dolphines. I think other reps where charging 30 each!
We also went on the walk on the wild side trip with thomson, it was ok i would recommend it. It was a waste of a very long day! Picked up at 8am waiting for late people to arrive didnt actually set off for the trip until after 9am. We where told visit to market then zoo. We firstly got dropped off at some pottery factory no one was interested we all got off went to toilet and got back on bus after being 2 hrs stuck on it, then we wen to market for 2 hrs which by this point i was not very happy walked from one end to the other and back waiting 40mins for the bus to appear. This then left us with only 2 hrs at the zoo which was the only reason i booked it for my son, we near enough ran around it still didnt see some things oh and the dolphiones is an extra 20dinar each charge this wasnt explained to us by thomson.
The staff, cleaners, waiters are amazingly polite, friendly people and they always remember who you area and what you drink. They are great, my son was alawyas happy to have a joke with them.
Day time activities - we only played mini golf
Entertainment - cannot comment never bothered.
The thing we experienced which i still cannot believe was on our stay it was a Tunisian Bank holiday some to do with France (check before you travel or book for any holidays) over a 1000 arabs desended on the hotel on the Friday 22nd March tea time like a plague of locusts they devoured everything in the path. Each one of them had three plus plates piled high of food, the tables where covered with food dropping out of there mouths, all over the floor they had no consideration for anyone not even there own. All the food had gone, people complained to the manager who was so very sorry and booked alot into the A la carte for free which was lovely. By the Sunday waiters where having to either accompany guests to get there food like a body guard or even get it for them, one had to get my son some ice cream as they had the tub which everyone got the ice cream out to there faces, filling soup bowls full of the stuff. I cannot explain to you what we saw just DO NOT GO ON THE BANK HOLIDAYS i would not want anyone to go through that!
All in all i would return but later on in the year would be best. The manager was quick to reponed to all compaintents best service ive ever witness in hotels hats off to the for dealing with that bank holiday mess.
