THE MEDINA HOTEL-SOUSSE

-a huge and sprawling building dating from centuries past with labyrinths of many corridors-in the central medina area of the city
-converted to hotel in the 70s and would appear no cosmetic treatment since then
-consequently rooms extremely dated but very functional,
-en suite bathroom extremely dated but functional
-room spacious & solid comfy bed
-multi channel SAT TV in room
-large patio area from room where you can here the hubbub of the medina
-basic but ideal breakfast
-bar & menu available
-stable wifi in lobby area only
-very friendly reception staff speaking good English

-a rustic and original hotel oozing with character and very cheap
-I knew what to expect and hence I have absolutely no derogatory comment
-not a place to impress your partner, but a great hotel for the traveller-walking distance from rail station and a short taxi ride to main Louge Station for connection to other cities

Room Tip: -Double room is the best option for single travellers and gives a larger room -check you have a pat...

Rooms are spacious, but very basic and the bathroom did not seem particularly clean. Breakfast is also rather simple. The hotel staff were kind and helpful. The location is ideal for exploring the medina and near the train station. It is good value for money and OK for a night or two.

We stayed at Hotel Medina for 7 nights of our month long visit to Tunisia. We are backpackers and look for value, cleanliness, friendliness and location in our accommodation. Hotel Medina was perfect for us. We paid 50 dinar for a double, Room 121 in the newer part of the Hotel. The room was very spacious, with room for our packs and a double wardrobe. The bed linen was thick cotton sheets and decent soft pillows. The bathroom had a large shower, no clinging shower curtain here! The external window in the bathroom was a bonus. The bedroom had French doors opening on to a large rooftop patio. The bathroom was very clean and our room was serviced every day. Sleep quality was good because the medina goes very quiet at night. The downstairs bar was not an issue either.
The guys on reception were helpful in solving any problems or giving general information. They all spoke English. The Hotel reception area has a lot of design interest and character as it is an historic building. It is a pleasant area to use your laptop and the wifi is free. Breakfast consists of juice, french bread, jam, butter, muffin, coffee/tea. This is the standard breakfast we were served everywhere in Tunisia in our price range. We specially enjoyed breakfast due to the magnificent smile and service from our waiter in the red jacket! We love staying in the medinas, but sometimes the hotels are a nightmare to find. This Hotel is so easy to find and is in a prime location as well. Near the medina wall and entrance, close to the Ribat, Mosque and souq. All the transport links are a short walk away. Local buses just outside the wall near entrance. Short walk to the train to Monastir and Mahdia and also train to Tunis or south close by. A pleasant stroll brings you to Boujaffar Beach where you can jump on a "Noddy Train" to Port el Kantaoui. Meftah and his staff were welcoming and friendly, we recommend Hotel Medina to fellow travellers because we so enjoyed our stay.

The hotel has a great location on the edge of the medina. The rooms are clean and large. We were offered our choice of a larger or a smaller room for 50 and 40 dinars respectively. As noted by the other comments, the rooms do not overlook anything and some of them look onto a wall. The rooms and hotel is freshly painted.

The men's bar on the lower level can be very loud at night and the sound tends to carry through the entire hotel. The breakfast was nice. Service was mediocre.

This was the only hotel in 5 weeks of travel in Tunisia where we were asked to pay for WiFi. It was offered for free by all the other budget hotels. The WiFi is Tunisa can be a bit spotty so it can take a long time to access a website. Other times it can be fast, but it is not consistent, so the price for the WiFi (which was only available in the lobby--next to the men's noisy smoky bar) was a bit excessive.

We chose this hotel as a budget base from which to explore Sousse and the surrounding area and it was excellent value for our needs.

The hotel is a nice old building just inside the Medina, approximately ten minutes walk from the main train station and a couple of minutes to the nearest road and taxis. The beach is about ten to fifteen minutes walk away. In the evening we had no problems with noise from the street.

The room itself was fine for our needs. It was basic but large and equipped with a TV and satellite receiver. The bathroom was also quite sizeable with a good shower. The room also had access to a roof balcony. Air con kept the room cool at night, although it wasn't the quietest.

Staff were helpful and some spoke good English.

Overall, for the price, we had no complaints. One slight downside was that the room did smell a little of cigarettes, which as non-smokers wasn't great. However we didn't ask for a non-smoking room, so was our fault.

I stayed at the hotel for a week in early August. It was not the first time, but the current receptionist is very helpful and speaks good English. The location was good , in the very center of Medina. The room is large enough for me, and has no decoration only with an air-conditioner and a small TV. I can't say it was a wonderful hotel for people expecting some romantic stomosphere, but considering the price, it's OK and I will back to stay again. Recomended for budget travelers, it's quite quiet and safe.

I stayed at this hotel in a triple room with a couple of friends. The hotel had a great location, just inside the medina walls within easy walking distance of the railway station and beaches.

Our room had a sunny balcony although it didn't overlook much. There was some noise from the cafe below but it wasn't open late so not really a problem. The staff weren't overly friendly (they actually criticised us for speaking French rather than English!) but they did allow us to leave our baggage with them while we went on a two day desert trip.

We were in Sousse for Eid al Adha, whilst most places were closed (except for the big touristy hotels along the main beaches) this offered us an interesting insight into this important festival with the sacrifice of the sheep that had been lining the streets in previous days.
