We arrived at Alexandria's Borg El Arab Airport at 2:00am on a Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt after a 10 hour flight from Vancouver, Canada, a 10 hour stopover in Frankfurt and 4 hour flight from Frankfurt to Alexandria, so we were exhausted. Luckily, we prearranged airport pickup through the hotel. Our driver greeted us at the exit of the terminal building with a warm welcome. We were so relieved to not be at the mercy of taxi drivers in a state of unconsciousness! We took refuge in the sumptuous interior of a black 7 series BMW, with lemon scented towels, chilled bottled water and candies at our fingertips. We had a 45 minute drive to look forward to - it was that good! Coincidentally, the first jazz selection happened to be one of our favorite Diana Krall tunes. Top marks were given for prearranging transport from the airport to the hotel, even at the princely price ($100US).
When we arrived at our hotel, we were greeted warmly by an army of friendly faces after having a bomb sniffing golden retriever tour around the hotel car at the security gate. Who knew golden retrievers had it in them; they never struck me as having the right stuff to be a security canine!
Our room was upgraded to a room with a sea view that could be seen from our private terrace. The night manager was very welcoming, yet professional. Photographs of the Four Seasons Alexandria at San Stefano do not do it justice. Walking around the hotel was amazing; the luxurious décor compliments the spectacular views of the sea from many vantage points. Hotel staff is busily dusting, misting and polishing as the hotel is not only new, but lovingly maintained. The hotel staff are friendly and warm and very attentive. Security is ever present, but unobtrusive.
Our 3.5 night stay at the Four Seasons Alexandria at San Stefano offered comfy bedding, beautiful surroundings and exceptional service. The level of service was amazing. Laundry, room service, housekeeping, turn down service were the best . The hotel staff never missed an opportunity to warmly greet us and offered exceptional personalized service.
The concierge services were unsurpassed as we toured around Egypt for four weeks in December 2008 and stayed at the two Four Seasons hotels in Cairo, First Residence in Giza and Nile Plaza in downtown Cairo. Although the restaurants at the First Residence and Nile Plaza were superior.
We enjoyed meals at the hotel. Byblos served Lebanese fare in an elegant dining room and Fresca served Italian fare in a casual setting. The breakfast buffet at Kala Restaurant offered lots of choices that were beautifully presented. Unfortunately, the restaurant is not busy enough to ensure the food remains hot. Food was barely kept warm. We would not recommend eating al fresco at Kala Restaurant's terrace; the traffic noise is almost unbearable.
Internet access, hotel transport and tours arranged through the hotel concierge are very pricey. Food prices are high, but not unreasonable for a Four Seasons Hotel.
This hotel not only met our expectations, but exceeded them. When in Alexandria, we would highly recommend this special hotel! Bonus: Starbucks is right next door!
