“Amazing fuul”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

The food at Mohamed Ahmed is just plain delicious! It's your standard Egyptian eatery: fuul, tamiya, and salads. Nothing fancy, but for whatever reason, everything is much better than at any other place I've had the chance to eat in Egypt. A must!

The service is extremely quick (did not wait more than 5 min) and the prices are very low (although not written in the menu).

“The real deal - great Egyptian food at real Egyptian prices”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2012

How can five people have reviewed this already and no one has said the most significant thing -- this place is vegetarian heaven?! I'm not sure that there's even any meat or fish on the menu. I've only been there once, but now that I know about it, you can be sure I'll go there often. I went with friends who are regulars and rave about this place.

Because we were in a group of seven, all of whom are expats living in Alexandria, we were able to try a lot of items - fuul, falafel (the best in Alex, I'm pretty sure), tahina, hummus, tomatoes with cheese, fried cheese, beets, pickled vegetables, shakshuka (sp? - eggs and tomatoes, pictured on the wall menu), eggplant, and lots of bread, of course. Everything was delicious and served at the appropriate temperature. We managed to just about finish all the food we'd ordered, and were presented with a bill for 101 Egyptian pounds -- about $16 US.

The restaurant is very simple, clean, very popular with locals, and bustling. It's not a touristy sort of place, even though it's well-reviewed in several tour guides, so please be very respectful of Egyptian standards of decorum and don't show up with lots of exposed skin or a demanding attitude. Be sure to leave a good tip; you can be sure you're helping hard-working Egyptians put food on their own tables too!

“Amazing felafel, great service and ridiculously cheap”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2012

We went there while on holiday in Alexandria.

We were told it can be difficult to find by yourself so we got a taxi there. We told the taxi driver the restaurant we wanted was near the Metropol Hotel (which it is) but he had no idea which hotel we meant. We then mentioned the restaurant's name "Mohammed Ahmed" and his face lit up. Apparently its reputation with locals is good.

The decor inside the restaurant resembles a greasy spoon cafe and was very busy on the Sunday night we visited. The menu is available in English and pictures on the walls make it easy to decipher what you want. We ordered fuul (refried beans) with hommus, felafel, beetroot salad and (cottage) cheese with tomato. The order arrived on our table in about three minutes with accompanying bread, pickled vegatables, tahini and a tomato and lettuce salad.

We stuffed our pocket breads with everything on the table and it was delicious. We also had a couple of cans of coke to wash it down. Very satisfied with the meal we were anxious about the bill. There are no prices on the menu and we were used to there being two sets of prices in most of the places we went (one for locals and a much higher one for tourists).

The bill came to an astonishingly low 21LE! About £2.50 for us.

The whole experience left us extremely happy: great food, great service and a great price.
