An atmospheric hotel with literary associations. It figures in Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet, and Somerset Maugham used to stay here. The view over the Eastern Harbour and along the Corniche is marvellous, whether from your room (best to get one on the corner so that it overlooks both the harbour and the square) or from the rooftop where you can dine or go for drinks -- you are overlooking one the most stunning scenes in history, the site where Cleopatra had her palace and entertained Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Nothing of that survives today except in your imagination and in the sea breeze and the plangent sound of the waves. But wonderful all the same! The best place to stay in Alexandria.
