“Never knew it was historical until recently”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012 via mobile

This place is just like an old cemetery. U dont have to pay 20pound if u want to see it from outside the gate, which for me is good enough. U can see everything clearly from the outside. For me its not worth spending 20 pound to see from inside

“Oldest tombs in Alexandria”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2009

Not as impressive as the catacombs, but reputedly the oldest tombs in Alexandria, The necropolis at Chatby (sometimes written Shatbi or Chatbi) are situated next to the Youth Hostel and across the road from St Marc's College on Port Said Street (near the Corniche, East of Suez Canal Street).
Entry cost 20 EGP for foreigners and my friend and I were the only visitors at the site. The tombs are hewn from sandstone rock which is weathered. Some tombs are above current ground level and others below (partly flooded). There was rubbish/litter/garbage around the site including plastic food wrappers which deterred me from taking photos in some cases. It is not possible to enter any of the underground sections. The site is larger than Mustafa Kamel Necropolis. There is a pleasant garden and shaded seating around. There are sections of columns and parts of statues on display as well, including two headless sphinxes. There are no signs or guidance of any kind for visitors.
Several beautiful items found at this site can be seen in the Alexandria National Museum and for that reason alone I htink this site is worth a visit. As cemeteries and tombs in Alexandria compare, I would rate this above Mustafa Kamel Necropolis (I prefer sites not to be obviously restored) but below the Catacombs. Add them to your "nice to see" rather than "must see" list for historic sites while in Alexandria.
