Owner description: Libearty Bear Sanctuary is the biggest brown bear sanctuary from Europeand has the largest surface in the world. Here, 75 bears found a nice home in this 5 stars welfare facility. Here you can see happy bears in their natural environment, after a bad life in circuses and zoo cages. The tours are guided by trained animal welfare experts and the visitors can see brown bears really close.

“Amazing place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2014

Amazing place! We really dont felt like in a zoo, but like an expected and welcomed guests at a bears real home. The stories about the bears past are upseting, some of them arrived to the shelter wounded, blinded, suffered in terrible conditions. And its a real pleasure to see them now in such a peaceful and quiet place. Highly recomended for children (and their parents too).

“Only bears but they have all been saved!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2014

We visited on a very hot day but saw a considerable number of bears as it was feeding time. The stories behind these individuals is very sad and it is amazing that all this effort has been put into making them happy again.

“A must visit haven for rescued bears”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2014

It is extremely upsetting to hear of the horrors these bears have been subject to by humans but when you see them in the sanctuary you feel overwhelmed that they are now safe and in a natural habitat. It is good to know that by visiting and paying the entrance fee you are helping to care for these bears. You take a walk through the sanctuary past their large enclosures so you get to see some up close whilst others who don't want to see humans can stay amongst the trees. A very worthy cause to support and somewhere you should definitely take the time to see.

Visiting the bears was the unexpected highlight of our trip!
These poor bears have suffered in terrible conditions before being brought to this wonderful safe haven in the mountains.
We couldn't believe how close the bears came to us, it was a real privilege to get so close to these majestic creatures. We could have stayed all day and watched them, but at the same time loved the fact visitors are only allowed for two hours a day.
This sanctuary belongs to the bears and we are only allowed to visit them on their terms.
A wonderful happy ending to their sad stories and very moving. Highly recommended for respectful visitors who don't think they are going to a zoo!

“a great lesson”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

Bears do not need the selfish love of humans. Give them back the freedom and protect them!
Starting from this, you can spend a great half day going to the Bear Sanctuary in Zarnesti. It's well worth it!
The place is well maintained and well organised. You feel like you're not intruding, yet you can see a lot and get really close to the bears. We visited it with our young son and for him it was such a rich experience! It was a lesson in biology, but also in generosity and kindness.
Easily accessible from Rasnov (DN73A). It's wise to check on the times of visit and it's compulsory to get there before noon.
There is a little train, very useful especially for younger visitors, and you can opt for it or you can walk. The guide accompanies you and gives a lot of precious information. Open to questions.
Somebody here mentioned the lack of written boards containing information and I felt the same, they would be useful to visitors and potential unguided tours.
What the "Milioane de prieteni" Association managed to do in Zarnesti is a great achievement.
